elliot smith (Oct 28 2003 00:36 GMT) - Last week Elliot Smith took his own life after battling for several years with both heroin and alcohol addiction. Although I've never considered him one of my favourite artists, I've probably returned to his third album Either/Or, a truly beautiful, haunting, brilliant record, more than any other release over the last ten years. You'd think that this alone would propel the singer into my list of all-time-greats, but it doesn't. And why? Because I also saw him play more than half a dozen times and, quite frankly, he always sucked. |

Those Pesky Unions (Oct 28 2003 00:35 GMT) - Today in Economics class, the lecturer talked about how unions cause unemployment. I have heard this argument before, but this time I was struck by the oversimplification of the claim that unions "distort" the market. Like any other market, the... |

Old Dog Hires New Trickster (Oct 28 2003 00:35 GMT) - Brazenly ignoring my advice, the New York Times has hired an ombudsman, the respected Time/Life veteran and baseball fanatic Daniel Okrent. Link via Henry Copeland, who asks: "What purpose does an official critic serve today? What kind of two-way street has 18 wheelers going in one direction and a lone tricycle (occasionally!) going the other? |

Focus on renewed debate over faith-based laws - OCHA IRIN (Oct 28 2003 00:35 GMT) - "Since October 2002, 18-year-old Nazia Bashir has been fighting a rape case that could, if she loses, lead to her being charged with adultery and sentenced to 100 lashes or death by stoning under Pakistan’s Hudud laws....the laws, under which rape cases are registered, a rape victim who is unable to prove her case risks being accused of adultery. These laws make consensual sex outside marriage a cognizable offence, while marital rape and raping a child-bride are no longer offences." |

17th Annual Bridge School Benefit (Oct 28 2003 00:33 GMT) - Music Front Reviews: Bridge School Benefit still has the advantage of being a rare fundraiser with a personal purpose. Students sit at the back of the stage throughout the show, their faces appearing on video screens during performances, reminding audience of the cause. Most years, it makes for intense, one-of-a-kind performances; this year's show was no exception. |

Peter Frampton; Joe Bonamassa (Oct 28 2003 00:33 GMT) - Music Front Reviews: Unlike many artists of his era, Peter Frampton appears to be neither struggling for relevance in today's chaotic music business nor pursuing it.
