Write Once, Publish Anywhere (Oct 28 2003 12:57 GMT)

- Researchers from Hewlett-Packard's Labs have adapted the famous Java motto for the publishing world, according to one of their papers, "Multi-channel publishing tool lets designers write once, republish in any format." They realized that it was time-consuming and expensive to distribute high-quality documents, such as financial statements, in different formats for different supports, like regular mail, web pages or e-mail. [So] researchers at HP's Bristol, UK, lab have created a technology to radically simplify this process. They call it Multi-Channel Publishing, and their goal is to make it possible to design and lay out a document once -- but publish it in any format. In Multi-Channel Publishing, documents are broken down into constituent components -- content, layout, styling and semantics -- then optimized and re-assembled automatically, according to the requirements of each media type.

Swimming with sharks - Great White Adventures rattle the cage in the deep below (Oct 28 2003 12:57 GMT)

- A metal cage is lowered into the ocean as the water begins to bleed red and rains fish guts from above. A diver in scuba gear gives the thumbs up. The diver turns around only to see a razor blade smile and a pair of cold, blank eyes from a great white shark staring him in his face. This was the experience of Capt. Max Hopkins, Depot protocol officer.

Painful Ears (Oct 28 2003 12:57 GMT)

- Here's an email sent to me the other day by Larry: Even when I dive to the bottom of a swimming pool, I get pain in my ear. Is this common and how can it be prevented? Hi Larry, The pain you describe is caused because the pressure outside of your ears is different from the pressure inside the air spaces in your ear. If you do not equalize the inside and outside pressures you can do serious damage to your ears.

The long, quiet, arched brick hallways and tidy air of hushed reverence occupy another world from the bustling marketplace I just left. The conversation I would be having, with one of the most powerful Islamic religious and political figures in this part of Pakistan, turns out to also be something out of a parallel universe."
