A PC in 2006 (Oct 28 2003 12:19 GMT) - From Bill Gates keynote: The personal computer in 2006 will be a 4-6 GHz machine with 2GB of RAM a 1 TB disk with 1GB networking and 54 Mb wireless. Well I am not sure about that, but today, to be honest, you still have a lot of PC running W98 as clients and Windows NT4 as server. And wireless is still a yuppy gizmo in Europe.AIB in Ireland for example run only with NT4. |

RCVS disability working party publishes guidance (Oct 28 2003 12:18 GMT) - The RCVS Education Committee this week approved guidance for veterinary schools on the admission of students with disabilities to the professional veterinary degree course. The guidance was produced by the Committee's Disability Working Party following two meetings and extensive consultation with admissions staff at the veterinary schools. The veterinary schools requested guidance on issues raised by the recently amended Disability Discrimination Act (1995) and they have welcomed this guidance as helpful and constructive. It also provides useful information to people who wish to apply to veterinary school. It will be amended and added to, particularly as more information is made available through the DIVERSE project. |

A postcard from Hell (Oct 28 2003 12:17 GMT) - Firefighters pin hopes on better weather It's like watching live reports from the gates of Hell. How do you put these numbers into any sort of perspective- 15 dead, 450,000 acres burned, 1,100 homes lost, tens of thousands forced from their homes? I can generally find humor in most anything,... |

Dutch traditions for all you foreigners (Oct 28 2003 12:16 GMT) - Wintertime is here. And while I may not like the weather too much there are also some perks. This means it's time for traditional dutch cooking. (Erwtensoep, boerenkool and hutspot to name but a few. For extra goodness add a full teaspoon of sambal to your gravy) and put Viking Music on the iPod when cycling to work. |

FlowJo (Oct 28 2003 12:15 GMT) - FlowJo, the supreme flow cytometry analysis software previously only available for Macs, is now shipping as v5 for Windows. It's written in Java, so maybe the two platforms will be able to develop alongside each other. Hopefully the increased market will bring down the ludicrously high prices soon as well. Seems like it's still beta though, and the Mac files aren't compatible with the PC version, so better leave this for a while. |
