Why I chose my pump (Oct 28 2003 17:45 GMT) - As I said in my "Minimed" post, pump users are passionate about their pumps. I looked at all the pumps, and narrowed down to Minimed, Distronic and Animas fairly quickly. Customer service was what finally helped me make the decision.... |

Military Affairs (Oct 28 2003 17:45 GMT) - My anarcho-agrarian friend Bill Kauffman, who worked for Reason back when I was still in high school, has an interesting essay on the Counterpunch site arguing that family-values conservatives should be at the heart of the peace movement. A sample: Absence may make the heart grow fonder, but love requires presence above all. The divorce rate more than doubled between 1940 and 1946. The Second World War, by removing men from households and removing many of those households from the rural South into the unwelcoming urban North, waged its own mini-war upon the American family. |

Futurama's cancellation and Fox's revenge (Oct 28 2003 17:41 GMT) - While Larry and Jeremy were visiting we discussed at various times our shared love for Futurama, and wondered how such good tv could have been cancelled after something like 5 seasons. Especially when its cousin, The Simpsons, was still going strong cruising into its fifteenth season. I speculated that Fox might have cancelled Futurama to strike at Matt Groening, who had repeatedly mocked Fox on the Simpsons with caustic barbs that could not be censored because of a non-interference agreement between the show and the network. With The Simpsons rated so highly it would be hard to justify cancelling that show, but Futurama was not quite as strong and made for an easier target. Groening's recent revelation that Fox News had attempted a legal attack on The Simpsons for its skewer of the Fox News ticker (which featured among other notes the formula Brad Pitt + Albert Einstein = Dick Cheney), and the apparent block of that lawsuit by Murdoch, convinces me even more that Futurama was killed for reasons that had little to do with the show itself. |
