The pros and cons of being mono-coastal. (Oct 28 2003 21:58 GMT) - It has now been 27 months since I officially became a mono-coaster. With the end of the dot-com boom, and an Incredible Shrinking Travel Budget, I haven't been west of the Mississippi since August of 2001. I was reminded of this the other day when I looked at my US Airways frequent flyer mile balance. Once, I was Gold Preferred. Now, I'm "Member". |

Phrase searching in PubMed (Oct 28 2003 21:57 GMT) - With Google possibly looking to index book content from a central database [via Erik Benson], it would be nice if they could lend a hand to the NCBI and sort out PubMed's search facilities. Not being able to do phrase searches (eg "injuries caused by excessive exercise" which just gets split up into separate words) is a fundamentally missing part of this search engine, while being a feature that Google manages really well. |

Traffic infrastructures and back doors (Oct 28 2003 21:56 GMT) - There's a lot of buzz about this little $300 dashboard device that changes traffic lights at the touch of a button. Meant only for firetrucks and the like, it seems the recipe has leaked and devices are for sale to the public. Bad news for traffic safety, obviously. This is a nice example of how it's a bad idea to base infrastructure on simple secrets. Because it's so much harder to keep something secret than it is to spread the word. |
