I am the Spam Queen.... (Oct 28 2003 23:16 GMT)

- Golly, what an honor, huh? I have to say that I'm usually fairly lucky with spam (* looking around for wood to knock *). I normally only receive a wee bit because of a few precautions. This week is the exception to the rule. Here's my latest -- another variation on the silly Nigerian scams.

Stuff I hate #43 (Oct 28 2003 23:16 GMT)

- Oh, you know what else I hate? The work phrase that sends chills down my spine and grows hair on the palms of my hands? (Ok, it doesn't really grow hair on the palms of my hands, but you get the picture.) The phrase that, I believe, every support person grows to hate? It's when someone walks up to your desk and says those three little words:

Group-think & Leftist Reasoning (Oct 28 2003 23:15 GMT)

- Arnold King, a hired-geek for Corante, rips Lessig and other Left-bent techies for their "elitist group-think" and uses their Bush-hatred and "Jeffersonian" distrust of the motives for the Iraq war to denounce their ability to lead the nation.King's rant reminds me of one of the comments made during my recent "wank session" on LGF.For the vast majority of people the vast majority of the time, the definition of "right" and "wrong' is driven primarily by clan membership and nothing else.Overwhelmingly, people choose up sides and then they pick their arguments to rationalize their choices. It is -- in general -- useless to try to convince people of a position in radical departure from their stated positions.

What does it mean to be patriotic? (Oct 28 2003 23:15 GMT)

- After the events of September 11, newspapers reported an upsurge of patriotism across the land. Americans put stickers on their car windows reading, "United We Stand" and wore T-shirts with images of the American flag. Even on college campuses, students rallied to express patriotic sentiments about America. Sixties boomers, long accustomed to scoffing at patriotism as "flag-waving," now discovered in themselves a surprising urge to wave flags. A very good article on what it means to feel patriotic to one's country.
