Fight the Fire (Oct 28 2003 23:43 GMT) - When I lived in Southern California in the early part of the 1990s, I saw earthquakes, wild fires, droughts, floods and the worst civil riots in recent American history. Not necessarily for those reasons exclusively, I found it hard to nurture much affection for the Golden State, but I still do have good reasons to remain sympathetic to the plights of its citizens — not the least of which is because my mother, sister and nephew all still live there. And, from fiscal crises to horrific lapses in Democratic judgment, I always feel at least a little bit saddened by the unfortunate events that always seem to beset the world’s fifth largest economy. |

Does she have a sister at home? (Oct 28 2003 23:43 GMT) - President Bush just nominated a judge for elevation to the District of Columbia Court of Appeals that I think I can really get behind. The DC Court is arguably the "first among equals" of the federal appellate courts that function one level below the US Supreme Court. Judge Janice Brown has had some very interesting things to say that I think many of a libertarian bent will find appealing: In Santa Monica Beach, Ltd. v.... |

Copy protection and copyright robs the future (Oct 28 2003 23:40 GMT) - Halley, David Weinberger and Dan Bricklin blog about Microsoft using Visicalc to show the backward compatibility of Longhorn. The irony is Dan's comment that the only reason that he, an author of Visicalc, has a working copy is because someone had made an illegal bootleg copy of it. In May, I blogged about Brewster testifying about why the DMCA is preventing him from breaking copy protection on old software which he wants to archive. I think this is an important issue. Old films are decaying in the cans, books are decaying. |

CAN CONSERVATIVES BE CHRISTIAN? (Oct 28 2003 23:36 GMT) - It often seems like American conservatives are just not humane enough to be true Christians. Sometimes a single picture says much more than any number of words. Here is a link to a picture that shows just how unloving and unchristian conservatives can be. This is how conservatives love their neighbors We already know that for the 2004 election the right is planning to try to scare the American people with their virulent phobias against gays, against affirmative action, against gun control, and... |
