Rassurez vous rien de grave ne lui est arrivé mais il a décidé de ne plus s'occuper de son bébé afin de s'ouvrir à des activités plus lucratives qui lui permettront de gagner sa vie. Nano in the South Pacific (Oct 29 2003 00:56 GMT) - I'm writing this from the island of Phuket, Thailand...in transfer to Singapore for a very exciting nanotechnology gathering. Must catch my flight...some interesting economic and technological observations to follow upon landing. (Josh Wolfe, Phuket, Thailand)... |

I Got A Rock (Oct 29 2003 00:56 GMT) - I'm a bit heartbroken at having to miss The Decemberists in DC tonight, but oh well. This is on in about two more minutes. I'm going to curl up on the sofa and watch it.... |

Emergence, reverence, and irrelevance (Oct 29 2003 00:56 GMT) - Via Jerry Michalski, here's a great text by Russell Ackoff, a pioneer of Operations Research, that sketches what I feel is the usual arc trajectory of successful fields of knowledge. The life of OR has been a short one. It was born here late in the 1930's. By the mid 60's it had gained widespread acceptance in academic, scientific, and managerial circles. In my opinion this gain was accompanied by a loss of its pioneering spirit, its sense of mission and its innovativeness. |

Drawing a line in the surf (Oct 29 2003 00:53 GMT) - Trudy Schuett of DesertLight Journal details her issues with Google News' judgment calls about what is and what isn't a legitimate news source. DLJ is a news journal that operates with a blog format. Here's a portion of her critique:This would say to me that Google is prepared to believe anyone who tells them they are a news source, yet for some unknown reason, for them, sometimes a blog is a news source, and sometimes it is not. The DLJ is not in any way a personal journal or diary... |

weird problem (Oct 29 2003 00:52 GMT) - ok, this was just bizarre. I had to run my daughter out to dance class - before I left, the mouse wheel wasn't working with BottomFeeder. I figured I must have somehow broken something, and decided to just leave it while I was out. 2 hours later, I get back. I get the login screen - keyboard doesn't work. |

Crap-VD's. (Oct 29 2003 00:51 GMT) - I am so glad this is failing. "Disposable DVDs have been on store shelves for a little over a month and, for the most part, they seem to be staying there.". I cannot imagine a more pointless waste of matter.... |
