Reaction appears to Longhorn peek (Oct 29 2003 05:57 GMT) - Microsoft announced the delay of Longhorn, yet again, until 2006. People got mad. Microsoft released a sneak peek at the new OS, and everyone was a little less mad. Now Microsoft is saying the sneak peek in DVD form will just be for developers. I am not sure why they made big noise about it if they were just going to limit it, but who knows Microsoft's plans. |

Hate is Not God's Message (Oct 29 2003 05:57 GMT) - Hate is Not God's Message Fred Phelps, reverend of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas, wants to erect a monument in a Casper, Wyoming city park that reads, "Matthew Shepard entered hell Oct. 12, 1998, at age 21 in defiance of God's solemn warning." according to the Rocky Mountain News. I clearly do not understand his version of the Bible. |

The end of civilization (Oct 29 2003 05:55 GMT) - I bought the June eidition of Harper’s specifically for this article by Jared Diamond, who wrote Guns, Germs and Steel, a book I highly recommend. I just got around to reading it (my reading pile requires architectural supports at this point), but I highly recommend it. Human needs and a healthy environment are not opposing claims that must be balanced;... |

Takes Five: Diane Chapman (Oct 29 2003 05:54 GMT) - Every day is Christmas for Diane Chapman and her husband, Jim, who own Silent Night Evergreens tree farm in the Marquette County community of Endeavor. The Chapmans hit pay dirt this year when the White House chose the official Christmas tree from their 650-acre farm. The Chapmans plan to cut down the 181/2-foot Fraser fir destined for the Blue Room right after Thanksgiving so it will arrive by Dec. 1, the day they'll present it to first lady Laura Bush. They are also sending two more trees for the private residence and the Oval Office, an 8-foot Fraser fir and a 12-foot balsam. |

Apple G5 dual supercluster now third fastest supercomputer on Earth (Oct 29 2003 05:53 GMT) - Jack Dongarra has updated his report (in pdf) on supercomputers on October 28, 2003, and now the Apple G5 dual supercluster is third in the list of top 500 supercomputers. The R_max speed is now 9.6 teraflop/s, almost 20% improvement from the previous value last week. Apparently they are still tuning the communications network for getting maximum performance of the system. I wonder if the Infiniband network will be able to match the speed of the G5 processors. |

Watching Nova (Oct 29 2003 05:53 GMT) - I'm watching Nova while I do a little light work. Tonight's episode is about string theory, and it's pretty good. Mostly made for older highschool students or distracted university humanities students, the production values are a mixture of Behind the Music, A&E Biography, Star Trek and National Geographic Presents. So yeah, it's a bit cheesy, but the writing is excellent and employs some subtle reinforcers for learning. Like playing with the volume to make keywords a touch louder, and a consistent and frequent use of icons representing specific concepts. |
