October 29: Bela Lugosi's Birthday (Oct 29 2003 17:59 GMT) - Seems appropriate for this week that we're probably all playing our Halloween-oriented records anyway. I can't think of any special songs, but it's something to mention as you play Monster Mash and Monster's Holiday. |

GPGMail (Oct 29 2003 17:59 GMT) - GPGMail , a GnuPG plugin for Apple's Mail.app, went 1.0 the other day, which reminded me to install it so I could start using PGP again. First I had to get MacGPG going, but that was a snap. I was up and running in about five minutes. |

Way to go Jake, this ... (Oct 29 2003 17:58 GMT) - Way to go Jake, this one looks cool. Manila feature: Password-protected RSS feeds. A new feature for Manila which makes it possible to subscribe to RSS feeds in Editors-Only Manila sites using any RSS news reader which supports HTTP authentication: This is especially useful for people who run private sites for a workgroup or project, or for people who run Manila sites in educational environments where the sites are required to have restricted access. |

What may surprise people however is that over 96% of information flows are due to telephone calls. The internet is over 2%, with radio and TV broadcasting making up the difference. RFID's and ERP systems (Oct 29 2003 17:55 GMT) - Business 2.0 draws some interesting conclusions about dreams and reality of integrating RFIDs with modern ERP systems. "More data means that corporations will be able to keep better track of their parts and product inventories at all times, and react faster to the minutest change in demand. The RFID tags on every box and pallet -- not to mention every soda bottle, hair dryer, and DVD -- will create such a flood of information that the enterprise software that runs most companies today won't be able to handle it." "The enterprise software that runs everything from manufacturing systems to inventory management to logistics and even databases is accustomed to processing information in digestible batches. |

A Little Piece of Home (Oct 29 2003 17:54 GMT) - As you can imagine, being out here in the Gulf can get lonely sometimes. Even with 60 other folks around, you miss family and home a lot. Travelling as far as I do, it seems to be magnified to me. This is a whole other world and culture out here. For me, it seems worse than when I was deployed with the Special Forces. |
