Finder Window Manager 1.6 (Oct 29 2003 19:10 GMT) - Finder Window Manager (FWM) is an application for managing all of your Mac OS X Finder window needs. This application allows you to create Window Sets to remember the size, placement, and all the view options of your open windows. Once a Window Set has been created, you can move, close, or otherwise modify your windows and easily restore the captured Window Set properties, opening all of your Set windows and recreating the windows' views--and you can have an unlimited number of Window Sets. When you have many projects in various windows, this application quickly becomes indispensable. While FWM provides an easy-to-use interface for managing Window Sets, Sets are just the tip of the iceberg of this application's capabilities. |

Convert Script to Markup Code 2.1.7 (Oct 29 2003 19:10 GMT) - If you've installed the Script Editor 2 beta (1 or 2) or have upgraded to Mac OS 10.3, then place this script in "Library/Scripts/Script Editor Scripts/". With a compiled script open in the Script Editor, select "Convert Script to Markup Code" from the Script Menu (or the contextual menu). The script will be converted to either HTML or BBCode (the HTML-like code used on many BBS including the MacScripter BBS) and placed on the clipboard. You can paste the BBCode into a message on the MacScripter BBS to have the script displayed with color coded syntax. |

Camille Paglia, the first weblogger (Oct 29 2003 19:10 GMT) - Camille Paglia claims today in Salon that she invented the weblog: Now and then one sees the claim that Kausfiles was the first blog. I beg to differ: I happen to feel that my Salon column was the first true blog. My columns had punch and on-rushing velocity. |

Missing the point (Oct 29 2003 19:10 GMT) - I've only followed the first four days, but thus far PlanetJemma is incredibly, dismayingly sexist. The creators seem not to have a clue about why anyone would love science, so they pretend sex angst will make it more attractive to 13-year-old girls. |

Additional signs that you've grown up (Oct 29 2003 19:09 GMT) - 1. Per Lara: You, the child who would once refuse to eat dinner on the grounds that the beans were touching the macaroni, now eat everything on one plate, including the salad with the runny dressing, on the premise that it stops you having to wash an extra bowl. 2. Kaiser Foundation study: Books losing to computers (Oct 29 2003 19:09 GMT) - "Infants, toddlers and preschoolers are spending far more time watching DVDs and clicking TV remote controls and computer mice than with books, according to a Kaiser Foundation study released yesterday. The effect of such high-intensity media exposure is unclear, researchers said, but what is clear is that the under-6 set is becoming far more media-savvy than anyone expected. 'We are pushing all these media further and further down to the crib,' said Matthew Melmed, executive director of the Washington-based children's advocacy group Zero to Three: National Center for Infants, Toddlers and Families. Melmed and a host of other children's advocates, educational experts and children's TV producers were on hand yesterday to discuss the Kaiser findings at the foundation's Barbara Jordan Conference Center downtown. |

Back to Business (Oct 29 2003 19:08 GMT) - The fires have moved far inland. We're seeing the sun today on the coast, and the smoke smell is noticeably lighter. That's good news for those of us on the coast, though not necessarily good news for people living further east. The entire community of Cuyamaca is gone, burned yesterday. Hard to imagine - all the cabins and homes (over 100) overlooking the lake, gone. |

Samsung Provides 700:1 LCD to Reviewers, 450:1 to Consumers (Oct 29 2003 19:08 GMT) - One particular product, the Samsung 173T 17” LCD monitor looks particularly good. Featuring a stunning 700:1 contrast ratio and a price tag under $500, this sweet little monitor looks to be the deal of the century, or so we thought. We received the 173T for review a few weeks ago and were immediately impressed by how sharp and bright the monitor appeared to be. The blacks were extremely dark and the colors were vibrant and rich. |
