Battle of Bannockburn stirrups unearthed (Oct 29 2003 22:59 GMT) - Archaeologists claim to have discovered the first physical evidence of the Battle of Bannockburn. A pair of horse stirrups, found earlier this year on a flood plain believed by most historians to be the site of the decisive second day of the battle, have been dated to the 14th century. They were unearthed by Tony Pollard and Neil Oliver, two archaeologists working on the final day of excavations for the forthcoming BBC2 series 'Two Men in a Trench'. |

Harwood Dale (Miscellaneous by Chris Collyer) (Oct 29 2003 22:58 GMT) - This small stone circle or ring cairn is situated just beyond the north-eastern edge of the southern end of Harwood Dale Forest on Standingstones Rigg close to several cairns and barrows. There are originally thought to have been around 24 stones here with the 15 that remain set into a low 14 metre earth bank, the circle itself having a diameter of 8 metres - it is possible that an earth mound extended over, and covered the stones but has since been eroded away leaving the circle visible. The tallest of ... |

Harwood Dale (Fieldnotes by Chris Collyer) (Oct 29 2003 22:57 GMT) - An easy walk southwest along the track from the barrier at SE982975 then follow the line of trees that run southeast. A word of warning though, when I visited in summer after a dry spell the track along the edge of the forest was a real quagmire, no idea why it was so wet or churned up or what it would be like in winter. Also within the forest is said to be a carved rock with a cup and three concentric rings - I made an attempt to locate it but couldn't find it (my GPS went haywire under the tree cover!) |

XCOR on the telly (Oct 29 2003 22:57 GMT) - In case anyone was watching, a couple of our inimitable readers were to be seen on "Future Flight" earlier tonight. The show, on ITV Channel 5, spent fifteen minutes out of an hour program showing the EZRocket in flight and on the ground. Jeff Greason showed up as a talking head, as did Aleta Jackson. I think I saw Dave Jones also but I'm uncertain. Maybe he'll confirm to us if he was in camera... |

Mysterious rock carvings (Oct 29 2003 22:56 GMT) - Rock carvings engraved into strange shapes are baffling UK archaeologists. One resembles a heart, another a human footprint. Aron Mazel and Stan Beckensall, who stumbled across the unusual carvings close to England's border with Scotland, believe they are the first such designs to have been discovered in the UK. Mazel and Beckensall are puzzled by their discovery and have consulted experts in the field such as English Heritage, but no one has been able to shed any light. "We are keen to draw people's attention to them - seeing the pictures of the markings may prompt somebody to come forward with new information, perhaps relating to similar rock art samples they have viewed elsewhere," says Beckensall. |
