The Riches of Mars (Oct 30 2003 04:58 GMT) - An unmanned probe found exposed gems scattered along the Martian terrain. Large quantities of a green mineral gemstone have been found on Mars. Rocky outcrops of the mineral olivine were spotted by a space craft orbiting the planet. On Earth, the mineral is known as peridot, an inexpensive gemstone used in jewellery. Its presence gives clues to the ancient history of Mars, suggesting the planet has been cold and dry for billions of years. |

Fall (Oct 30 2003 04:57 GMT) - Ross Mayfield nails how I feel about autumn in Seattle, describing the effect of being in northern latitudes after the equinox:In Estonia, where I lived once, its compounded by the fact that coming winter solstice the sun barely skirts the horizon and its basically dark except mid-day. A strange and wonderful cycle ensues. From summer solstice, the party of the year, on to Christmas people get a little depressed. From Christmas to party time moods heighten. |

No joy (Oct 30 2003 04:57 GMT) - Well, we didn't see the aurora. We drove to a less thickly-populated area in the hopes of getting away from some of the light pollution, but we're in the middle of the BosWash Megalopolis and even in the part of the county that's still semi-rural we weren't able to find any place that was really dark -- or even any place that was moderately dark and had a good view to the north. But we had brought our binoculars with us, and enjoyed looking at the stars for awhile -- it was dark enough to see many more than we usually can here in town. And at least I know we tried, and it just wasn't possible to see it -- perhaps it didn't come this far south, although it sure looked on the POES map like it might have been visible if there weren't so darn much light pollution. (The sky is never black here -- at best it's dark gray, and here near the mall it's usually medium gray and sometimes even blue. |
