Sirius' "Stream Jockeys" (Oct 30 2003 15:59 GMT) - I've been spending most of my time listening to the Jazz channels so far. Really smooth. One unexpected highlight is the so-called Stream Jockeys -- they seem to come in every three songs or so, and give you a little... |

Lie detector test for girlfriend ... (Oct 30 2003 15:59 GMT) - Lie detector test for girlfriend I just read an utterly disturbing letter to "dear prudence" from a woman whose boyfriend has not only asked her to take a lie detector test to 'prove' she is not unfaithful, but has actually arranged for one to be taken. Run, don't walk! |

Another chance to see an aurora (Oct 30 2003 15:57 GMT) - David and I drove up to Skyline Boulevard last night to do some skywatching in dark surroundings. We had a great view of a very clear night sky with about as little light pollution as one can manage near San Jose. The Milky Way was visible, ever so faintly, that's how good the viewing conditions were. But no aurora! The coastal range had clearly had high winds earlier in the day. |

The N-gage (Oct 30 2003 15:57 GMT) - Here's a page all about one of the most-beloved features of the new Nokia combination phone & gaming platform, the N-Gage. Some of them are really clever, but I think the entire G5 is my favorite. Or maybe I like the dogs better. Vintage gaming gear is pretty funny too. |

Want a fat Iraq contract? (Oct 30 2003 15:57 GMT) - Here's how the existing contractors got theirs: donate lots of money to the Republicans, employ Republican former governmental officials, or have an executive with close ties to members of Congress. How the world works is not a mystery. Cronyism has long been a problem with American government, or government in general (c.f. |

Mississippi still ignorant, racist (Oct 30 2003 15:57 GMT) - Stories like this one, about the popularity of the Confederate X as an element of the Mississippi state flag, just continue to confirm my harsh judgment of the South as the domain of racists. Just one quarter of Mississippians are willing to get rid of that symbol of modern racism from their flag. Georgia had a flag change forced on them, and the redneck electorate was angry. I'm sure these people know exactly what signals they're sending to black Americans and to Americans living elsewhere, and they just don't care. They're racists and they're proud. |

Our cat is a big wuss (Oct 30 2003 15:57 GMT) - I was sitting at my computer doing something or other pointless. The cat came by to get a little patting, then exited my lap to explore the possibility of authoring a web browser using my PC keyboard. Then he settled himself in my office window, which is slid up just enough for a crouching cat and a nice breeze. Some time later I heard that unearthly growling coming from the window. Bishie was staring fixedly at something on the porch, and growling at it. |

"Sea of Blood" is just what it implies (Oct 30 2003 15:57 GMT) - I wish I could car wreck the submissions queue... The article's title is Sea of Blood, and when I say that link's "pretty ok", I'm probably just saying that because it doesn't have pictures. Today's tale, if you haven't guessed, is about dolphin hunting in Japan and the effect on the surrounding waters. I have to go find something funny now. There's nothing like that here. |

Canadian slaughterhouses can't even tie their own shoes (Oct 30 2003 15:57 GMT) - If you eat meat from Canada, there's a 94% chance that the the slaughterhouse where the meat came from was hit with a warning from the food inspection people - in just one month. More than half of the violations were considered "major", and included problems like "fecal material on carcass in cooler", "carcasses stored on the floor", and "mould present on knife storage containers." It's been a while since I ate meat, but I'd like to think that news like that would get me to seriously reconsider an omnivorous diet. Don't worry though, there are changes to the system in the works that'll make it all better: the industry is moving towards a self-regulating process. |
