Hack-kins: Beaten To The Analysis (Oct 30 2003 23:07 GMT) - Salon has a fine article on why so many techies are doing Atkins and other low-carb diets. The observation that it has the thrill of "hacking your metabolism" is one I noted to myself some time ago. The article makes... |

Ed Yourdon Back In The Doom And Gloom Business (Oct 30 2003 23:07 GMT) - Ed Yourdon made quite a name for himself in the late 90s predicting that the Y2K problem was going to bring about the end of society. He sold a ton of books and videos based on his fear mongering statements that the lights would turn out at midnight on January 1st, 2000. After that didn't happen, he seemed to lay low for a bit, but now he's back predicting that American jobs are being lost forever overseas. Now, there's quite a valid debate over offshoring issues, but seeing Yourdon's track record of raising a big stink to sell lots of books about a problem that didn't pan out, I'd take it with a pretty large grain of salt. He seems to like to take a simple case and extrapolate it out, without considering how other issues may impact what actually happens. |

Diego Dovall reacts to my ... (Oct 30 2003 23:06 GMT) - Diego Dovall reacts to my "hate" piece with a very interesting series of points himself. He takes me to task and forces me to think about things I've never thought about before. Good stuff to think about. Here's a quote: "My point is that Language (yes, capital L) has been steadily distorted to the point in which the only way to get attention is to scream at the top of your lungs and be "controversial. |

Lean, Mean Magazine Machine (Oct 30 2003 23:06 GMT) - Susan Thea Posnock with Sarah Wyatt at Folio: THE NEW RULES - First off, I found it interesting with the extra person in the byline. Is she a research assistant? What exactly did she do for the story? Anyway, the duo wrote about the magazine industry laying off a lot of staff during the 'lean years' for advertising. |

Remember this! [Patrick Brown] (Oct 30 2003 23:05 GMT) - I here the poles are melting at an extreme rate, oh well! We won’t be there of course but I’m sure your children will and no doubt the scientists will sort it all out! The idea of guilt or even any movement by the masses to change their ways was it seems, just another ‘new age trip’. In the blink of an eye all that we think we are and all our puffed up egotistical ways are gone! ‘I want to be a tree’ the advert said, do you remember that? |
