In The Bedroom (Oct 31 2003 00:59 GMT) - I wonder how In The Bedroom won an Oscar for "best picture"? It's not a bad movie, but it was... |

Looking for a deathbed conversion (Oct 31 2003 00:57 GMT) - My guess is that such questions prick us with profound discomfort because they point out the degree to which each of us in some way has sold out to the amoral philosophy of the free market system, and then rationalized that corrupt sense of self with an incoherent, toxic form of sky god monotheism validated by space age military technology. In other words, we’re as moody and agitated as any heavily armed addict whose supply is threatened. ... |

I'm up for a game, you up for a game? (Oct 31 2003 00:57 GMT) - Anyone wanna play 5 truths and a lie? Chalk it up to boredom, but it sounded like fun when I wrote this out. The whole purpose is you have to guess which one of these 6 things is a lie. Good luck. I have a hole in one of my nipples due to some funky hormone imbalance/infection when I was 19. |

Adding Columns to a DataSet (Oct 31 2003 00:56 GMT) - Here's a perennial favorite in VisualWorks: You have a dataset widget, and you would like to dynamically add a column at runtime. How do you do that? Well, there's been a support tip on this for years - and I made use of that tip in BottomFeeder. The all new view has 2 modes: |

Budget Rent-a-car nightmare (Oct 31 2003 00:55 GMT) - Flemming had a nightmare experience with Budget Rent-a-car. I'm doing my part to help spread the word, so that prospective car renters may benefit from what he learned. Budget gets an average of 3 stars on Epinions - but mostly from the American side, I reckon; Avis ranks first. |

Krugman Cat Altitude Index? (Oct 31 2003 00:55 GMT) - Excuse me, Wind Rider, but what is the Krugman Cat Altitude Index? And then there's this. Yeah, the cats are getting treats. Mostly because I'm extremely confused.... |

Bottom (Oct 31 2003 00:54 GMT) - I woke up fully-clothed, physically shaking, completely embarrassed, and deeply disappointed in myself. I have been crying on and off for eight hours now. Chatting with Ryan and Jeans has helped a little, but I feel hopelessly isolated in shame. I realize it is not solely my responsibility, but I accept all of it nonetheless. Placing blame matters not and, ultimately, the fault lies in me. |

Scott Anguish on Controllers (Oct 31 2003 00:53 GMT) - One of the talks that I am super happy to have played a role into getting onto the schedule at the Mac OS X Conference is a presentation introducing the new NSController layer in Cocoa by Scott Anguish. Controllers are a new topic that I’m really happy to see in the Cocoa frameworks but right now, not many people know much about it—so with a bit of work we managed to get Scott here to talk about them. Of course this was just one of many Cocoa based talks here at the conference that I’ |

A Small, Nice Improvement in Software Update (Oct 31 2003 00:53 GMT) - A small little improvement in Panther is the addition of a single button to the Software Update program: The Pause button. When you are on a laptop, this little button removes the need to make sure you are somewhere that you can sit for a while. If you start an update and it comes in slowly, you can pause out and put your laptop to sleep and go somewhere else to finish. Easy peasy. |

New Articles (Oct 31 2003 00:53 GMT) - Right now on the front page of the Apple Developer Connection website there’s a link to one of my latest efforts that was published in the brand new MacDeveloper Journal(a joint venture of MacWorld and O’Reilly) titled Xcode: A First Look which takes and inital dive into the new developer IDE from Apple. Also published recently are two articles on the Mac DevCenter: |
