MTV (Oct 31 2003 04:21 GMT) - I want my MTV! Or maybe I don't. Regardless of your opinion about music television, it cannot be denied that a 24-hour television channel devoted solely to music (well, at least at first) has helped to shape the media-frenzy world that we inhabit today. MTV was the defining cultural movement of the '80s, and inside beat's choice to explore this week as we revisit the '80s in music, art, fashion, cultural icons, movies, celebrities, theater and multi-media. Hungry like the bull (Oct 31 2003 04:21 GMT) - Martin Scorsese's 1980 film, Raging Bull, has stood the test of time not only for its cinematic brilliance in portraying a man battling the world as well as himself, but through the techniques and nuances that give the movie a cohesiveness and stifling realism. This film not only marked another milestone in the already impressive career of Robert DeNiro, but also welcomed newcomers Joe Pesci and Cathy Moriarty, both of whom received Oscar nominations for their performance, and made them recognizable names in the movie business. |

Totally pretty in pink (Oct 31 2003 04:21 GMT) - Dear Diary, When I woke up this morning, I warmed up my crimper and readied the Aqua Net hairspray. A Pat Benatar cassette played in the background. The mood was set. It was a day of reverence to the 1980's, the decade of absolute fashion excess. I began with a little prayer asking guidance in dressing like a dedicated '80's worshiper, but how does the fashion zealot choose among 5-pocket acid washed Z. |

Creeping death part deux (Oct 31 2003 04:21 GMT) - In 1987, the release of the sequel to the independently produced Evil Dead hit with a slight bang in only 301 screens across America. Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn, shook the souls of only a couple hundred thousand viewers that year, but after a slow, gradual climb to the top, its DVD and VHS sales of today have turned this little three million dollar film into a priceless cult classic. |

Love shack (Oct 31 2003 04:21 GMT) - One of the more surprising things offered by Caddyshack is Chevy Chase in the privileged guise of a sex symbol. The 1980 film actually launched this trend, and Chevy went onto star in 1983's Vacation, where he was stalked by Christie Brinkley, and then two years later in Fletch, playing a charming identity swapping journalist. One could throw this on top of the already mountainous pile of unexplained phenomena of that decade, but there is a reasonable explanation for Chevy's life in the movies: it's in the words. |

Now and forever at the Winter Garden Theater (Oct 31 2003 04:21 GMT) - For one reason or another, everything was just bigger in the '80s. From teased hair to power ballads to moles on the foreheads of Soviet Premiers, the "Me" generation proved to demonstrate in terms more elaborate than any other in recent history that size does in fact matter. Louder, more colorful and more extravagant than any decade the 20th and 21st centuries have seen before or since, the '80s' philosophy of excess and leg warmers touched all aspects of world culture, and theater, of course, was no exception. |

Lookin' at the man in the mirror (Oct 31 2003 04:21 GMT) - For most of us, art in the '80s refers to the Crayola masterpieces we created in elementary school. Post-modernism might be considered coloring outside of the lines in our coloring books, and minimalism might be thought of as expressing a bird with a bold check mark across the sky. Believe it or not however, the '80s were an exciting time in the art world. Post-modernism was at its height and artists tackled controversial subjects like AIDS, racism, feminism and gay awareness. |

Domo Arigato Mr. Miyamoto (Oct 31 2003 04:21 GMT) - Now before I start, I just want you all to know that the following has nothing to do with the fact that Nintendo flew me out to Seattle this past week on their dime. It has nothing to do with them allowing me into their corporate headquarters for an entire day. And it definitely has nothing to do with the fact that they sat me down, held my eyes open and "let" me watch video after video of their upcoming games while listening to the old Ludwig van. No, no, no, my little droogies, it has nothing to do with that at all. |
