As more traditional business yardsticks take hold, many companies face the difficult decision to charge for some of their online content and servicesNand users have begun to accept that they can no longer get everything they want or love for free. Sure, the Web con... |

Devil-Linux 1.0: The (hell)firewall (Oct 31 2003 11:59 GMT) - Today, Halloween, marks the debut of Devil-Linux 1.0, a runs-from-CD (or USB flash device) firewall/router distribution designed to give you a large amount of security in return for very little setup work. The Halloween release date and the 'Devil-Linux' name itself were chosen for humor value, not for religious reasons. The Devil-Linux developers tend to be light-hearted, but don't let their conversational silliness fool you: This is serious software with a serious purpose. |

How Much Information? (Oct 31 2003 11:54 GMT) - The School of Information Management and Systems at the University of California at Berkeley concluded its study How Much Information? (2003) and results are available online. The study attempted to determine how much information is produced in a single year, in this case 2002. Comparisons are made to an earlier study from 2000 that used information production rates for 1999. The current study examined "stored information" (paper, film, magnetic, and optical storage media), which produced around 5 exabytes of new information in 2002, and "information flows" through electronic channels (telephone, radio, TV, and the Internet), of which 18 exabytes of new information were generated in 2002. |
