That's more like it (Oct 31 2003 13:59 GMT) - It's Friday, the sun is shining, it's Halloween and the local radio station is doing a "Dead Rock Stars weekend" to celebrate. My drive to work this morning consisted of three Ramones songs, followed by a Sex Pistols song wrapped up with a song by the Dead Boys. (Yeah my drive to work really is that short..*L*)That's the way to start a day, even better than coffee! |

Blue Gene/L, the first member of the family, will contain 65,000 processors and 16 trillion bytes of memory. Due in 2004 or 2005, the system will be able to perform 200 trillion calculations per second. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory will use the system for performing nuclear weapons simulations. |

M.Broil writes "This is a nice and fairly complete 'first look' at MacOS 10.3 (Panther), but author Chris Gulker, who I happen to know was an Apple PR guy years ago, spends a lot of time comparing the Mac 'Panther' release to Linux, which he seems to use most of the time these days. He obviously likes a lot about Panther, but he doesn't think many Linux users will switch to it, and that a lot of 'classic' Mac OS users may not want to move to it, either. |

EverLurking writes "There is a very interesting discussion over at Ars' Mac Forum about how Mac OS X 10.3 has implemented an on-the-fly defragmentation scheme for files on the hard drive. Apparently it uses a method known as 'Hot-File-Adaptive-Clustering' to consolidate fragmented files that are under 20 MB in size as they are accessed. Source code from the Davwin 7. |
