a great photo-op (Oct 31 2003 13:46 GMT) - Bush wanted to have a "we are the world" moment with some prominent Muslims, a great photo-op, or so it seemed. Apparently the White House was trying to mend fences most recently and notably broken by that dolt General Boykin. Certainly every little boykin or girlkin is entitled to their opinion, and to express it. But Boykin's off-the-wall comments, delivered in uniform, appear to be US policy, and they are counterproductive to what we are trying to do in Iraq and the world in general. Unfortunately, the general doesn't have the bigger view. |

Nosferatu No More? (Oct 31 2003 13:45 GMT) - Happy Halloween, Nosferatu (No Thanks to Copyright) "Tonight, while the trick-or-treaters visit, I will be screening Nosferatu in my driveway on an 80" HDTV projection screen. Released in silent black and white in 1922, Nosferatu is an unauthorized adaptation of the novel "Dracula" by Bram Stoker and is widely considered one of the classics of cinema. Certainly, many think it is the best adaptation of Dracula in film, one of the most influential horror movies of all time and a masterpiece of Expressionist filmmaking. Thanks to copyright law, however, this film was very nearly lost to us (The Saga of Nosferatu)." [The Importance Of] Read the whole story on Ernie's site, where the kicker is "thank goodness for 'pirates. |

Avec une copine elles le ramènent à la maison (de campagne) et s'en occupent pendant un jour ou deux. |

"Brother Bear": Can't We All Just Get Along? (Oct 31 2003 13:40 GMT) - Disney seems to think it's found a failsafe formula: Combine "exotic" settings and situations, carefully scrubbed of annoying cultural disconnects, with "familiar" characters and relationships. Aim for a "We Are the World" flavor with light-brown-skinned human characters whose facial features are vaguely, not too obviously, third-worldish, but give them lines right out of a TV sitcom. |

The Dylan Remasters (Oct 31 2003 13:40 GMT) - I must have been asleep at the wheel last month, for Columbia records has reissued a ton of classic Bob Dylan records. I own a number of these already, albeit the horribly dull original CD issues, but I would definitely consider replacing them with these. Interestingly, they are all SACD Hybrids (Super Audio CDs), which I don't know a whole lot about, and frankly don't feel like upgrading an entire stereo system to support. I'm sure they sound fantastic (I've read elsewhere they separate Dylan's voice to an up-front, center channel and flank instruments to the sides for an up-close, intimate sound), but since I listen to music in the car and on my Mac, there's little need. That said, the first one I'd buy, without hesitation, is Blood on the Tracks -- an album I didn't 'discover' until college when a friend brought it with him on a spring break trip. |
