Connecting the dots (Oct 31 2003 19:59 GMT) - Josh Marshall is doing real reporting on his weblog, connecting the dots between assertions of Iraq's attempts to procure uranium from Africa, and the appearance of the now infamous fake Niger documents. The short version is that shortly after the CIA demanded that references to the uranium from Africa be expunged from a Bush speech, an Italian journalist recieved the fake Niger documents from one of her sources and then was instructed by her editor to deliver them to the US embassy. The speculation is that the documents (which are now known to be fake) were produced by either pro-war elements in the the US itself or Israel. Obviously this is a real conspiracy theory, but given that the documents are certainly fake, and the timing, it looks like conspiracy might be the right answer here. |

SCO goes off the deep end (Oct 31 2003 19:59 GMT) - I've been paying attention to the SCO case, but haven't been writing about it much. In recent days, SCO appears to have gone completely over the edge, and has basically decided that the GPL is invalid and furthermore has been behaving as though that's the case. Groklaw has the best continuing coverage. |

Repeat After Me (Oct 31 2003 19:59 GMT) - This hasn't been covered much, to my knowledge. In the Developer Tools install for Panther, there is a new application called Repeat After Me (in the /Developer/Applications/Utilit folder). Kim S often told me about this program, and that they couldn't find the source to the original version. It looks like they've overcome that issue and created an OS X version. Basically, Repeat After Me allows you to enter a string of text, generate a phoneme list, then speak the string and apply your cadence and pitch to the phoneme list... |

Blogger News Item (Oct 31 2003 19:57 GMT) - Protestors are blocking forestry roads, hoping to prevent fur-traders from cutting down one of the last stands of virgin Douglas Furs in the province. The protestors, naturalists, and activists who are opposed to fur-trading, say they are prepared to go to jail if necessary. Many block the road singing hymns, while others have climbed the majestic fur-coated trees setting up cozy camps high in their warm, furry branches. They say they won't leave until the forest is declared a natural sanctuary, safe from the saw and knife of commerce. [More] |

Is there an aggregator in ... (Oct 31 2003 19:56 GMT) - Is there an aggregator in the house? I love the RSS aggregator in Radio Userland and I use it all the time. But it's on a desktop computer that is not conveniently accessible outside the Salon network. So I'm looking for an aggregator that I can install on my laptop (it's a Windows machine) to take my feeds with me wherever I go. I like the "all on one page" format of Radio rather than the multipane, RSS-headlines-like-emails-in-O approach of so many popular aggregators. |

Bogeymen (Oct 31 2003 19:55 GMT) - CocoWeb (trans) is a project which has assembled 516 manifestations of the Bogeyman in Latin America. The list includes the well-known Coco or Cucuy, a dark figure who makes an appearance in the art world as the subject of one of Goya's Caprichos. Any Hispanic child can tell you about La Llorona, a grieving woman who walks in the night (familiar enough to be used in a controversial got milk? ad). In South America they can tell you about the Sack-Man, on of the original bogeymen, who walks in the darkness, looking for children to throw into his sack. |
