Possible? Yeah, Possible. (Oct 31 2003 20:09 GMT) - I recently wrote a little blurb on Longhorn. Specifically I commended MS for being as open as they are being. Mike, a frequent commenter here, took offence to a certain part of my post, which he is free to do.... |

The history of Halloween... according to Kenneth Copeland Ministries. (Oct 31 2003 20:07 GMT) - You wanna read something reeeaaallllyyy scary? Then check out this brochure produced by Kenneth Copeland Ministries on the history of Halloween and why good Christians don't celebrate it. Talk about revisionist history! UPDATE: OK, I've already received an email from someone asking what exactly is wrong with the "history" I... |

Disappointment abounds (Oct 31 2003 20:07 GMT) - At least my Windows XP PC disappoints me, too. Sure, it's fun for playing games. But I can't for the life of me figure out where the files I want are actually stored -- like the free update to Myth III: The Wolf Age I downloaded. I bought the game last weekend for $10 at Media Play, and there are updates online from MythDevelopers. |

Disk imaging from CD, over the network (Oct 31 2003 20:07 GMT) - In the office yesterday, we realized that Apple had done a very cool thing by combining Disk Copy with Disk Utility. (Previously, I'd felt this was a drawback. Now I'm feeling better about it.) Disk Utility has Apple Software Restore capabilities -- the same kind that were introduced with the "asr" command line utility last year, with a Jaguar update. Yes, that means that it can restore any local image -- or remote image, via a URL (including HTTP) -- to a local target drive. |

Evolution of AI and ethics of AI. [Kaleem Aziz] (Oct 31 2003 20:06 GMT) - I believe that AI will be the next in evolution. Man wasn't always here, he evolved from monkeys (and other primates). So also, AI that is not available now will take birth through man's consciousness. Even though independent to a larger extent, it will soon realize what took our experts a thousand generations to understand. AI will learn it faster. |

Feh (Oct 31 2003 20:05 GMT) - You know, I suspect that the reason the universe keeps throwing me things which require me to be patient is because I have no patience. Feh. I suppose that it's handy, then, that I also have no sense of time...... |

SWA drops online double-credit bonus (Oct 31 2003 20:03 GMT) - My brother forwarded me this unfortunate news about Southwest Airlines' frequent flier program: "After seven years of double credit for online flight bookings, Southwest is calling the promotion quits. Southwest loyalists have until December 31 to book tickets online and earn four credits per round-trip flight." [Smarter Living] This means that I'll be earning only 6 free Southwest tickets per year. And unless they lower the present 100 credit threshold, I'm going to lose my Companion Pass next year. |

Helpline Comment (24272) (Oct 31 2003 20:02 GMT) - Tee Fred: I would guess that the CD drive controller cards (and sound cards) use only a few different port addresses. Besides trying them all, there may be some program which can autodetect. Or if you run windoze you could check the resource settings that it comes up with. As for wireless cards, I know there are 802. |
