Edward Teller, Dr. Strangelove (Oct 31 2003 23:05 GMT)

- Physicist Edward Teller has moved on, as the ancient Romans used to say, to the Elysian Fields. Good riddance, I say, paraphrasing George W. Bush’s comment in another context. Which is ironic, because obviously Bush thought highly enough of Teller to accord him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2003, the highest civilian honor in the United States.

Christian cruelty (Oct 31 2003 23:03 GMT)

- I do not wish to sound callous, but isn’t the current fashion for dying in public getting just a little out of hand? In recent weeks, we’ve had people queueing up to kill themselves at rock concerts or risk blowing their brains out on live television, while the High Court has been awash with petitioners arguing for the right to die by their own hand.

- The other day I went to quite a posh party — ten tables of six at a very expensive London restaurant. Raw material (Oct 31 2003 23:02 GMT)

- There’s a scene in the film What Lies Beneath in which the heroine has an altercation with a haunted bathtub. These things happen, I guess. But it was stretching credibility way beyond breaking point when later in the film she used the bath again. After all, it is a truth universally acknowledged that in the face of ghostly goings–on it is important to run away, never to return, as fast as possible. And twice as fast as possible, if one is alone in a house, miles...

Back to the garden . . . (Oct 31 2003 23:02 GMT)

- Down through the ages philosophers and poets have mused on humankind’s anomalous place within the natural order. Shakespeare, in the persona of Hamlet, could see Man as both “paragon of the animals” and as the “quintessence of dust”. Pascal in his Thoughts famously called us “a thinking reed”, but also a ‘freak’, “the glory and refuse of the universe”. Rilke’s Duino’s Elegies portrayed us as extraordinarily ill at ease in the world when compared...

All That Microsoft Buying Google Stuff (Oct 31 2003 23:02 GMT)

- Ah, there goes the press again. It was pretty common knowledge that Microsoft approached Google about the potential of a buyout much earlier this year, and Google said no thanks. However, now that a single reporter from the NY Times found out about it, the press is going nuts with Microsoft wants to buy Google stories. From everything that appears to be going on (and, clearly, I have no idea about the specifics of the discussions), Microsoft has been talking with Google about a whole variety of things for many many months. Every once in a while they bring up the possibility of an acquisition, and every time Google says no.
