Roar of the Panther (Nov 01 2003 23:59 GMT) - I got my copy of OS X 10.3 aka Panther this week and have successfully installed it on my iMac. I now have to install it on my Powerbook as I'm giving a talk on Panther at the next meeting of Clubmac on November 5. So far, so good. I had been worried that my iMac wouldn't be powerful enough - it's based on a 400MHz G3 processor - but that doesn't appear to be a problem. |

A Writerly Blog (Nov 01 2003 23:58 GMT) - Posted by The Happy Tutor "A Voice" on 10/28 from The Mechanical Poet: Half an hour later Ray pasted the note into a blank ledger. (This was the beginning of his collection of strange and illiterate texts.) By the time the glue was dry enough to close the covers of the ledger, he was done with Jane. What if an epistolary novel were written as notes by various speakers "to whom it may concern" in reverse chronological order? |

Longhorn To Open the Era of "Replace and Defend"? (Nov 01 2003 23:58 GMT) - Jon Udell has an interesting piece looking at some of the recently-released specs of Longhorn, the next version of Microsoft Windows (planned for release in 2006), and what it means for the rest of the technology world. He also gives a link to another article by Joe Hewitt, which looks at XAML, Longhorn's new language to let developers write applications in XML (hmm, where have we seen that idea before?). Hewitt sums up Longhorn's ambitions thusly: I think the bottom-line of XAML is that it is equally useful for creating both desktop applications, web pages, and printable documents. |

What Have I Done? (Nov 01 2003 23:57 GMT) - Comment spam is infecting the blog world, because blogs have high page rank. People will embed URLs in their comments, when allowed (either via HTML or auto-linking) as well as with their name. So, in the interest of cutting down the abusers of blogs, until the point in time in which I can REALLY fix this with new software, I have done the following: Some posts will be set to "no comments", at my discretion HTML has always been prohibited; auto-linking was disabled Name linking was removed from comments on archive pages The RSS feed will still contain name links, because Google doesn't index RSS (and it wouldn't matter, because the page rank of the RSS feed would be basically zero, since nobody browses it directly with their browser). |

Re: using another computer (Nov 01 2003 23:56 GMT) - If the laptop is the same operating system and you can install to the same path (including the same drive letter/hard drive name) you could just make a copy of your entire Radio folder on your laptop. Rename the copy on your computer to Radio UserLand Backup (just keep it in case anything goes wrong with the copy on your laptop) When you are finished, copy back the Radio folder to the original location. Postcode supper (Nov 01 2003 23:56 GMT) - As part of my church's charity fund-raising effort, and also as a means to encourage members of the congregation to get to know each other a bit better, we're having a series of postcode suppers over the next few weeks. Basically, that idea is that everyone living in particular area of the city gets invited along to someone's house, to meet the other church members that live nearby, share a meal, and contribute a small amount to our appeal. Last night I managed to wangle an invitation along to the EH7 supper, even though I don't actually live in that postcode. There were around a dozen of us that turned up, from a variety of backgrounds and with a variety of ages. I was lucky in that I already knew about half the people there, but it seemed very easy to wander up and talk to the ones I didn't know, primarily because of the supreme efforts of our host and his team of helpers to make us feel at home. |

Open Theist to be kicked out of Evangelical Theological Seociety? (Nov 01 2003 23:55 GMT) - The ETS appeared to be quite clear that Open Theism (the belief that God neither knows nor usually predetermines human actions), was just plain wrong stating "We believe the Bible clearly teaches that God has complete, accurate, and infallible knowledge of all events past, present, and future, including all future decisions and actions of free moral agents," They appear less clear about what they should do about its proponents, however with a major committee recommending unanimously that Clark Pinnock could stay in the society whilst the majority decision was that John Sanders should go."With evangelicalism becoming more loosely defined these days, there will be an increasing battle on fronts like these where traditional understandings are challenged by modern views. The idea of God as sovereign is clearly undermined by Open Theism, which to some however has the draw of being perhaps less challenging to the initial hearer. If God really is in some way in charge of the universe and could stop any event from occurring, and indeed knows what will happen before it does this poses the greatest dilemna to Christian thinkers.Of course to claim God DOESNT know may seem to 'let him off the hook' but does that really help us? |

http://scriptingnews. userland. com/2003/11/01#When:3: (Nov 01 2003 23:54 GMT) - I had lunch today with NYU journalism prof Jay Rosen and spoke at length with Chris Lydon about various ideas around academia, journalism, politics and weblogs. Noted that the term "open source" is being used to describe journalism and politics these days and wonder what exactly that means. In open source politics, a term which Joe Trippi uses to describe the Dean campaign, could I take a snapshot of their codebase (borrow the candidate) and fork the project? |

Pashua - a face for your scripts (Nov 01 2003 23:52 GMT) - I'm a bit behind on this link, but if any of you Mac OS X users are PHP, Python, Perl, tcsh, or AppleScript hackers, you might want to check out Pashua, a really simple-looking way to make GUIs for your scripts. (I know, I know; AppleScript can already do this; but frankly, AppleScript's dialogs still look like crap, even compared to anything else based on Carbon. Also, with AppleScript, you don't have as much control as you do with Pashua. |
