De Monday Morning Update (Nov 03 2003 18:59 GMT) - I've been working on this since I posted last. It's shaping up nicely, although my CMS of choice keeps giving me fits of "no, I won't do it the way you think I will... you do it MY way or not at all, buddy" attitude. I still think we're on track for a mid-week launch. Daws and I need to finish writing one section, go over the site again and check for weirdness (ok, unacceptable weirdness, the closer this gets to launching, the weirder I feel), and then make it live. |

PDC, old friends, scorched earth and more (Nov 03 2003 18:58 GMT) - Thursday night I abandoned the throngs of PDC kids and their hellish hotel drinking binges to go see an old friend. Not that I didn't want to hear more about how cool Longhorn is going to be, just that my horns are going to have time to grow a few more points before any of it is going to be available. The good news for Microsoft is that they are very much alive technologically, after a five year hiatus (I remember one of their developer conferences being cancelled, supposedly because only 18 attendees signed up ... and this after JavaOne had attracted 15,000 the week before.) Now there's a bit more balance, with a serious set of offerings in the Windows/C#/. |

The Moka Media Center PC (Nov 03 2003 18:58 GMT) - New media-centric PC from Moka that bears a strong resemblance to Sony's line of Vaio W desktops, and has a 17-inch display, 5.1-channel digital surround sound outputs, a TV tuner, a DVD drive, an FM radio, and comes with a remote control. Now this might get confusing, but please just stay with us on this: the Moka Media Center PC doesn't run Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center Edition operating system, but it does have one useful feature that none of the official Media Centers PCs have -- you can watch DVDs or TV or listen to CDs or the radio on it without actually having to boot it up first. Read [Thanks, Greg]... |

New Blogger on the block? (Nov 03 2003 18:57 GMT) - tBLOG is a new site/service that provides you with hosting for a blog. It looks similar in style to blogger/blogspot but there are no adverts that I could see and they also provide RSS 1.0 feeds of the blogs. Looking at the front page I'm not sure how professional the service is as the comment "We know banners are a bother, but at tBLOG our traffic is your traffic, so deal with it." doesn't look very encouraging for helpful responses from technical support! |

Family Values Revisited (Nov 03 2003 18:56 GMT) - New at Reason: Remember when Arnold was still fighting the female terminator and the California recall was still in doubt? Halcyon days, when "Teapot Dome" were the words on all our lips and it seemed like everybody owned a pet rock! Peter Bagge takes you in the wayback machine to a time when it still seemed like persnickety personal complaints might be enough to stop the unstoppable. |

Alternative compensation systems for digital media (Nov 03 2003 18:56 GMT) - John Palfrey of the Berkman Center at Harvard Law School provides an excellent overview of proposed compulsory license mechanisms for digital music: "These proposals suppose that the copyright system currently used in the United States, Europe, and many other countries, to stimulate and reward the development of digital content would be replaced by a system in which the creators and producers of such content were compensated by governments in proportion to the frequency with which their products were consumed." The folks at Berkman, which just received a substantial grant from the MacArthur Foundation to explore such "alternative compensation systems," are to be complimented for their honesty. |
