Not at NGN (Nov 04 2003 17:59 GMT) - I've attended NGN the last two years. This year I decided not to go (it costs a lot of money, and I have other stuff I want to spend my "professional development" budget on). So I am trying to get as much as I can without attending. We'll see how effective it is to read the daily posts and listen to the CD's (I hope Jim will buy them while he's there) and talk to Jim (who is attending). From yesterday's daily update, I found this interesting: |

Japan is coming to grips with an increasingly dive ... (Nov 04 2003 17:59 GMT) - Japan is coming to grips with an increasingly diverse population. The question is whether it will choose racism and politicians will profit from fueling racial strife. This is not an issue that is going to go away. Part of our job here is to help Japanese understand that foreigners are people too. I think the best way to do that is to get out of our comfort zone and make Japanese friends. |

Faces of the Fallen (Nov 04 2003 17:59 GMT) - If you want to get some sense of the human cost of our intervention in Iraq, take a look at the Washington Post's Faces of the Fallen site -- it shows photos and biographical information (including how they died) for every American soldier killed in Iraq since the opening of hostilities in the spring. Keep in mind, too, that these are just the soldiers who were killed in action; the site doesn't include the thousands more who have been wounded. |

Get Out and Vote (Nov 04 2003 17:59 GMT) - Today's Election Day across these United States, kids, so make sure you take the time to get out and vote! Remember the next time you read the paper and wonder how things got as screwed up as they are, that the biggest reason is because people don't take part in the political process. That leaves the field open for anybody with a special interest to hawk or a bag of money to throw around. So, go cast your vote and help get this country moving in the right direction again! |

(O-Ton. "Er hat den zweitbesten Grund erfunden... |

(Nov 04 2003 17:58 GMT) - Mike Sanders: "I would love to hear somebody (maybe Scoble or Joshua Allen) make the cost-justifiable business case to follow Microsoft along the Rich User Client path." Too bad you missed the demo done by Merck. They saw enough business value in doing a rich client. They see that it'll save millions in the development of new drugs. |

This acting school is really ... (Nov 04 2003 17:55 GMT) - This acting school is really well regarded, but damn- what a time sink! Turns out twice weekly sessions aren't enough, they also want an hour before class and several other afternoons and evenings a week. I just can't keep up with that. I have a life, too. Plus, the classes felt more like therapy than working on your craft and that is just not cool. |
