China Still Limiting Internet Usage (Nov 05 2003 08:59 GMT) - Fang-Face writes "There is an article from 29 Oct at Reporters Without Borders about how authorites in China are to step the control of internet cafes. It's a brief article, but chock full of content and low on wrong-wing rhetoric. (Ordinarily, one must approach their reports with a fair bit of sceptism as their reporting is rather strident.) The page with the article also has a number of links to related material. |

Someone has probably already written ... (Nov 05 2003 08:57 GMT) - Someone has probably already written about and thought about this, but I was wondering the other day about how so many of the most unhealthy health practices are so closely tied to the most unhealthy social and environmental justice practices - thinking of sugar, harvested by slaves, and now chattel slaves, beef, robbing the plains, creating notions of manifest destiny NOT directly tied to the corrolary Christian stewardship, booze, pharmaceuticals - all tied to the enrichment of the few at the expense of many. Including militarism. Especially militarism. I find incredible irony in the fact that the same folks who created the "Rebublican revolution" and remain their foot soldiers, the "middle" class white male, to pay less taxes, support less welfare mothers, are supporting welfare patriarchs, the true beneficiaries of Keynesian economics that so many of their footsoldiers, Friedman and possibly Wiedenbaum (both of whom are Jewish, which I would think would freak those freaky conservatives right out of their paranoid right-wing skulls) indoctrinated as they are, would dismiss as being borderline communist, are supporting a budget that is all about imperialism and martial superiority in the interest of short sighted economic gains - read: |

Former Guantanamo inmate sues US - BBC (Nov 05 2003 08:56 GMT) - "A man who was imprisoned by the US military at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, is suing the Pakistani and US governments for damages worth over $10m. Pakistani cleric Mohammed Sagheer was seized by US troops fighting in Afghanistan in 2001. He spent roughly a year with other suspected al-Qaeda and Taleban operatives in the US military prison. His lawyers say he is suing for the mental and physical torture he endured at Camp X-Ray in Guantanamo Bay." |
