Mr. Brown goes to town (Nov 10 2003 23:59 GMT) - Reality TV might be the institutionalization of Warhol's 15 minutes of fame, and while jonesing for more Queer Eye lately I've adopted MTV's Made as a surrogate. The premise, of course, is that a youngish person (typically high school) has the opportunity to attempt identity change with the help of an MTV-appointed trainer. The results are usually successful, with drama kids turning into prom queens or girls becoming extreme sports athletes. A recent episode of Made showed the transformation of a Louisiana State University student from geek to player, the story of Mr. Tony Brown. |

Home from Iraq? (Nov 10 2003 23:57 GMT) - Jack Kemp wants us to bring home from Iraq the flat tax: In 1996, I chaired the National Commission on Economic Growth and Tax Reform - the Kemp Commission. We concluded that the income tax system was "impossibly complex, outrageously expensive, overly intrusive, economically destructive and manifestly unfair." Despite the significant progress on capital gains tax relief, dividends tax relief and some modest improvements on individual income tax rates and business expensing and depreciation, the Internal Revenue Service code continues to tax income multiple times and penalizes work, saving, investing and entrepreneurial risk-taking. By simplifying the code we'd save individuals and businesses money in tax preparation and consulting services, we'd save the government money in auditing complex returns, and we'd save taxpayers from hidden loopholes and dodges inserted into the law by members of Congress. |

GB Lions vs Australia (Nov 10 2003 23:56 GMT) - Last post by Bucephalus Prime on 12:17 10/Nov/03 - For a start, this was around 23487345987234987234 times better than every single game in the RWC put together. A sending-off after 12 seconds, GB with 12 men coming within five minutes of beating the best team in the world, and all played with an intensity and skill for the most part absent in the RWC. |
