Mean Spirit (Mauvais Esprit) (Nov 10 2003 23:36 GMT) - Film Reviews: A pacing-impaired alleged comedy in which the victim of an auto accident is reborn as the motorist's bottomlessly vindictive son, "Mean Spirit" is about as appealing as a soiled diaper. Flashily lensed yet stillborn enterprise saddles an otherwise talented cast with an ill-conceived script rendered insufferable via grating execution. |

The limits of drug law enforcement (Nov 10 2003 23:35 GMT) - The following useful exercise comes from Mark Kleiman: "One idea about drug law enforcement is that by making the illicit traffic more expensive and dangerous for the people who sell drugs, enforcement can push up the prices of drugs and therefore reduce consumption. The old criticism of this approach, based on the notion that demand for illicit drugs was highly inelastic, turns out to be incorrect; cocaine and heroin, at least, seem to have greater-than-unit elasticity, so a price increase will actually decrease the total amount consumers spend. So increasing drug prices would seem to be a useful goal. |

No, Jackass, 10% of the US gross national product does not go to Israel (Nov 10 2003 23:34 GMT) - This has got to be a serious contender for the stupidest statement I've read in a long time — a claim that "10% of the US gross national product goes to Israeli residents and the Israeli government". FYI, 10% of US GDP (no one uses GNP these days) is over a trillion dollars. As in $1,000,000,000,000.00 or $1. |
