The Definition of Marriage (Nov 11 2003 23:31 GMT) - I was doing some research on Dean, gay marriage and civil unions, and came across this quote from Dean in the Advocate: Well, when same-sex marriages take place in Vermont, legally it’s called a civil union, because the definition of marriage is between a man and a woman. I never knew this, so I looked it up. Sure enough, Merriam-Webster's definition: Main Entry: |

In Flanders Fields (Nov 11 2003 23:30 GMT) - I really had trouble putting my thoughts on Vetran's day together, this year. I looked around, hoping to find some inspiration, when I saw this Mark Steyn column. He mentioned purchasing a poppy from a vetrans' organization. It reminded me of this classic poem. |

Lake Wyman (Nov 11 2003 23:30 GMT) - So, I'm going to head on over to Lake Wyman tomorrow for some fishing. I've really got no idea whether there are any fish in there, but what the heck, right? It's about two or three miles from the Boca Inlet, and it's worth a shot. The wind is really whipping around outside right now. It won't be fun to put the yak on the car tonight unless it dies down. |

Defense funding bill exempts NSA from FOIA (Nov 11 2003 23:30 GMT) - A new US Defense spending bill includes a provision exempting the NSA from certain kinds of FOIA requests. Steven Aftergood at the FAS says that, while the provision seems redundant, it's likely to be abused for unintended purposes. Another provision would give the National Security Agency (NSA) an exemption it requested from the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) for so-called "operational files." Those files are intended to involve the technical collection of... |

The Downsides To TiVo? (Nov 11 2003 23:29 GMT) - Almost everyone you talk to who owns a TiVo (or similar device) talks about how it revolutionized how they watch TV. They talk about how they watch what they want, when they want - and say it makes television watchable again. However, some are also realizing there's a downside to such things. Being able to store stuff up, means that you can create a backlog. Some, who haven't figured out how to manage their TiVo experience find themselves feeling chained to their TV to "catch up" on all the shows they missed. |

The Dewey Decimal System of Love (Nov 11 2003 23:29 GMT) - I did not like this book. I was holding out hope because the title was a little quirky, I thought it might be fun. But alas! It was not. In addition to reading many comic books, fantasy and sci fi, and other random things, I do also read some chicklit from time to time. |

Je me sens jeune. |

So I'm going to Vegas again... (Nov 11 2003 23:27 GMT) - I seem to have been there quite a few times now, yet I don't see why my sister wants to spend her 21st birthday there. Maybe it seems that way because I've been to Reno so often. I went last holiday season with the family, and about 3 months ago with SV and AC when they visited. Hmm... ever since I met S, I've been going to casinos a lot more... |

Dave McComb on Business Semantics (a new IT Conversation). (Nov 11 2003 23:26 GMT) - As anyone who's taken on a large-scale multi-party integration project will tell you, "the plumbing is the easy part." By far the greatest challenges come from reconciling semantic differences between systems and organizations. In this interview, Dave answers some of the hottest questions in today's world of semantics. In a recent essay, author Clay Shirky challenged the veracity of the Semantic Web. Dave agrees in part, but goes on to defend the concept and its importance to solving our profusion of data and our inability to make use of it. |

A wonderful obstruction to the mind (Nov 11 2003 23:25 GMT) - As I mentioned earlier, I've gotten no more words on my NaNoWriMo today, aside from appending a Concluding Note to the end, which really shouldn't count. I simply need to reassure myself that the subject matter of today's Mister Boffo cartoon is purely coincidence. Sigh... |
