The TEMPTING OF AMERICA (Nov 13 2003 12:39 GMT) - TAI Utters the A-WordIn 1965 a couple of Yale law professors set up a couple of doctors to be fined for administering advice on contraceptives to patients. Connecticut at the time had on its books a never-enforced statute forbidding the use of contraceptives. The professors got their way, and the case (Griswold v Connecticut) made it to the Supreme Court, then under the leadership of Chief Justice Earl Warren. In the majority opinion striking down Connecticut's ban, Justice Douglas inserted t ... |

[The protectionists] can, in a few words, present an incomplete truth; which, for us to show that it is incomplete, renders necessary long and uninteresting dissertatioins. |

Mouse Mess (Nov 13 2003 12:39 GMT) - Linnea Riley: Mouse MessAnother library hit - Evan appreciates the humour of the mouse who makes a huge mess while helping himself to a feast and then looks around the kitchen in horror and declares: "These people need to clean their house!" He also likes speculating about how the people are going to react when they see their kitchen. The illustrations are FABULOUS. |

The Day Dixie Died: Southern Occupation, 1865-1866 (Nov 13 2003 12:39 GMT) - The Day Dixie Died is a powerful reading experience. It conveys the feeling of occupation by the North more vividly than most battle books convey their battles, and its effects are cumulative, a chapter-by-chapter buildup of gloom and horror. I have put it down more than once thinking, "This is the darkest thing I have ever read." Not a direct polemic against the occupation, it registers its points one awful anecdote at a time. A chapter title could have served as a better book title: |

The Last Samurai : The Life and Battles of Saigo Takamori (Nov 13 2003 12:39 GMT) - If you're looking for historical Civil War content in the forthcoming movie The Last Samurai, I'm not sure you'll find any. If this is the shooting script, the Civil War dies out after page 11.There is actually a book called The Last Samurai about the fellow who would have been the boss of Tom Cruise's character. It has nothing to do with the film and I myself don't know of any ex-ACW veterans who went to Japan to become "The Last Samurai" or to work for the "last samurai."The best known expatr ... |

Confessions of a Deathmaiden (Nov 13 2003 12:39 GMT) - Not content to just knit my way to, through, and back from Ohio, I ran out and bought a quick read that had been on my list for a few weeks, Confessions of a Deathmaiden, which had a cool title and a great front-flap review: a midwife to the dying who helps people cross-over is set-up in the murder of a child and has to discover who the real killers are to exonerate herself and her sister-hood. The story was certainly that, but it was generally lacking in much of anything interesting, despite t ... |

OpenBSD lyrics / MP3s (Nov 13 2003 12:39 GMT) - "I'm seeeecure... by deeeefault!" AFAIK OpenBSD is the only OS - besides being arguably the most secure - that includes custom made (and surprisingly good) music in its distros _singing_ about the OS, its mascot, and recent events involving the ongoing development of the OS. |
