Nice article on Swing Threading (Nov 13 2003 13:50 GMT) - Someone on the SWIXML mailing list posted this nice article on Swing threading. Correctly threaded GUIs being something that many programmers don't get right I figured I ouhgt to pass this on. Oh how I miss the days of BeOS where everything was multi-threaded by default from the API and you had to go out of your way to make an app not be multithreaded.... |

RESPONSE: MicroGoogle Gets A Mix Recently, we ask ... (Nov 13 2003 13:50 GMT) - RESPONSE: MicroGoogle Gets A Mix Recently, we asked what you guys thought about the idea that Microsoft might very well have its heart set on acquiring Google by hook or by crook if it goes public in the future (already having tried unsuccessfully to buy it outright, sources say) and what concerns this raised among the Gnomies. We got a mixed bag of responses, and here's what some of you had to say. Low Carb Craig in British Columbia writes: I've been programming and using software since before most people even imagined a PC and have watched Microsoft and the consuming public "grow up" with computers. |

Parking near London [Bernard Ramsden] (Nov 13 2003 13:49 GMT) - In a couple of weeks time I will be leaving Winchester in the morning to drive to Leeds. My plan is to call into London, I have one meeting I need to arrange and there others that I could possibly arrange. I do not want to bring my car into central London, so looking at the map, my thoughts were to follow the M3 to the end and then take the North Circular to Hendon(the start of the M1) and get a tube in from there. Does this make sense and if so what is parking like in Hendon? Anybody get any better ideas? |

Linux: Allocating Memory On NUMA Systems (Nov 13 2003 13:49 GMT) - Erik Jacobson recently posted a proposal for implementing node-level round-robin memory allocation for large hash tables that are allocated by the kernel to better support NUMA systems. In his email he offers a concise description of the problem, explaining that the portion of the kernel responsible for allocating these hash tables is not NUMA aware: "The end result is that the first node in the system is hit harder in terms of memory usage than other nodes. On a very large system (32 or more nodes with 4g of memory per node for example), the first node in the system can have less than half of its total memory available." This can lead to poor performance for large computational jobs when the memory is not spread equally among all nodes. |
