Quotes from Tom Baker (Nov 14 2003 23:59 GMT) - Jim Acheson, our designer, told me I looked like his Auntie Wyn and I have never forgotten it. I wondered if it was the way I walked or wore my hat, but Jim just said that I had some indefinable air of an aunt. It was then I began to hope that one day I might play Lady Bracknell. |

Libraries told 'stop lending' (Nov 14 2003 23:59 GMT) - Over in Japan, the Daily Yomiuri has a story about the conflicts between bookstores, publishers, and libraries. The prolonged economic slump lies behind the sluggish book sales, but authors organizations and publishing houses feel public libraries are becoming a problem, too. In last autumn's symposium titled "Debate Between Authors and Libraries," authors said that lending a large number of new books would lead to a violation of their copyrights. But public libraries refuted this claim, saying that lending out new books would increase the number of readers and the public service did not undermine book sales. Authors proposed introducing a system requiring libraries to compensate authors financially according to the number of books they lend. |

Wisconsin Concealed Carry passes (Nov 14 2003 23:58 GMT) - In case you missed it, Wisconsin passed a concealed carry bill this week and sent it to the governor's desk for his veto. The bill passed both the Assembly and the Senate with near veto proof majorities, so even when... |

Trial and terror (Nov 14 2003 23:58 GMT) - The Supreme Court has asserted its independence by agreeing, over the objections of the Bush administration, to decide whether foreigners imprisoned at the U.S. Naval base at Guantanamo should have access to the American court system. No one can accurately predict how the justices will decide the issue, but there is still considerable merit in the court recognizing that it, and not the White House, is the supreme gatekeeper at the nation's courthouses. |

Judge benched (Nov 14 2003 23:58 GMT) - There was no alternative but to remove Alabama Justice Roy S. Moore from the state's Supreme Court. The self-styled Ten Commandments judge had flouted the law flagrantly. To allow him to continue serving as the state's Chief Supreme Court justice would have been to allow him to act above the law. |

Letters (Nov 14 2003 23:58 GMT) - I never thought I would be doing this, but I would like to offer my sincerest compliment to David Fitzsimmons for his cartoon that appeared on Veterans Day. In it he depicts Lady Liberty congratulating United States service personnel for their part in ridding the world of past "isms" and for their role in the long process of filling the grave of the current "ism" (terrorism). |

In the end, I think I'll still be for Bush. Sure, he alienated the international allies. But I'm not certain that the Iraq war could have been undertaken without alienating the international allies. |

That Was The Weak That Was (Nov 14 2003 23:57 GMT) - Much of contemporary satire is lacking in punch. It fails to nail the great and good, or tackle the issues that affect people's lives. Heck, Have I Got News For You even features politicians as the supposed satirists. Rather than play court jester, this site aims to fulfill the Juvenalian role that satire should have, i.e. |
