- The article "Swastikas by the Seaside" was written by Peter Monteath, Senior Lecturer at Flinders University, Adelaide. In it he discusses one of the Nazi holiday camps which aimed to invigorate German workers. The Colossus of Prora was conceived as a massive holiday complex, a sop to the working classes, and an incentive to increase productivity. The camp was never finished, but Monteath paints an intriguing picture of the most popular section of the much-disliked German Labour Front (DAF) - the recreational organisation the KdF. In this essay he discusses three of the most popular topics in the field, that is the witchcraft trials at Salem of 1692, "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller, and trials for witchcraft in Essex, made infamous by the witch-finder general Matthew Hopkins. He discusses the colonial world-view which underlay the trials at Salem, comprised of issues such as economic and social competition, and Puritanism, as he points out. He then relates these events back to the East Anglian witch hunt of 1645-7, comprising over 100 executions and 250 accused, largely thanks to the momentum gathered by Matthew Hopkins and John Stearne. |
