President Kennedy and the Cuban missile crisis (Nov 14 2003 03:45 GMT) - The Web site "President Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis" is part of the Learning Curve set of resources in the series "Heroes and Villains of the Twentieth Century", at the Public Record Office (PRO). These resources allow students to interpret original documentation, and analyse major events and decisions of the twentieth century. This section asks students to decide whether John F. Kennedy (JFK) acted as a hero or villain, when he indulged in brinkmanship with Krushchev and the USSR in 1962. A useful timeline summarises the events of October 1962, and illustrations of original documents add value to this site. |

Swastikas by the seaside (Nov 14 2003 03:45 GMT) - The article "Swastikas by the Seaside" was written by Peter Monteath, Senior Lecturer at Flinders University, Adelaide. In it he discusses one of the Nazi holiday camps which aimed to invigorate German workers. The Colossus of Prora was conceived as a massive holiday complex, a sop to the working classes, and an incentive to increase productivity. The camp was never finished, but Monteath paints an intriguing picture of the most popular section of the much-disliked German Labour Front (DAF) - the recreational organisation the KdF. Seen as the start of mass tourism, an examination of the KdF provides an insight into the combination of health and holiday and its implication for social architecture. |

The devil in Essex : witch hunting in Old and New England (Nov 14 2003 03:45 GMT) - The Web site "The Devil in Essex : Witch Hunting in Old and New England" is an essay by Dr Malcolm Gaskill, an expert in the study of witchcraft, and director of studies at Churchill College, Cambridge. In this essay he discusses three of the most popular topics in the field, that is the witchcraft trials at Salem of 1692, "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller, and trials for witchcraft in Essex, made infamous by the witch-finder general Matthew Hopkins. He discusses the colonial world-view which underlay the trials at Salem, comprised of issues such as economic and social competition, and Puritanism, as he points out. He then relates these events back to the East Anglian witch hunt of 1645-7, comprising over 100 executions and 250 accused, largely thanks to the momentum gathered by Matthew Hopkins and John Stearne. |
