Inflation (Nov 19 2003 09:22 GMT) - The inflation data for October is out, and at 1%, Austria is supposedly one of the European countries with the lowest inflation rates. So why do I have the feeling that everything has become much more expensive than 1%? I checked the detailed data from the Austrian Statistics Office, and it turns out that it's the selection of goods to determine inflation that has a slight distortion effect: According to the official data, tomatoes are 38% more expensive, green bell peppers 26%, strawberries 18%, bananas 9%, and a pork schnitzel (raw) is up 6%. It's those things of daily use that have become significantly cheaper, like flight tickets (-17%), all-inclusive holidays (-8%), computer games (-15%) and overnight stays in foreign countries [sic! |

Infrared Back Online! (Nov 19 2003 09:22 GMT) - I managed to get Joey's Actisys IR4000US working with Windows XP. Previously both he and I had problems connecting to our Nokia phones via the USB dongle with Windows XP. Other versions of Windows like Win2K would work flawlessly. To make it work, you have to go to the dongle's properties page and select SigmaTel 4000 instead of the default SigmaTel 4012 as the "Infrared Transceiver Type". Woohoo! |

Recent information inflow (Nov 19 2003 09:21 GMT) - I have a copy of Quicksilver sitting in my living room, but I haven't picked it up yet. Instead, this weekend I read the latest Steven Saylor, A mist of prophecies. Saylor writes mysteries set in Rome at the end of the Republic, during the civil wars. Saylor's research is great, unlike some other Roman-set mysteries I've read. He's also interested in describing crucial events and people of the time. |

Proud of my home state (Nov 19 2003 09:21 GMT) - I'm extremely proud of my home state of Massachusetts for its recent court decision about same-sex marriage. I don't know if this will be the changing point for the country as a whole, if the courts will have to follow through, but it's a good step forward. |
