The very model of a ... (Nov 21 2003 23:54 GMT) - The very model of a modern internet service provider. The ISP Nanny State. I've become interested in the wireless ISP business, partly because I'm tired of the "half-fast" Internet served up by the telcos and cablecos, and partly because the cost/quality ratio of radios has improved to the point that it's plausible to consider establishing a wireless ISP business in some of the growing, but under connected, areas where I live. So I started prowling several industry web sites and mail lists to get a feel for the landscape. One of the first things I came across did not make me feel good. |

Mutual Fund Scandals (Nov 21 2003 23:54 GMT) - Three cheers for Michael Lewis. Lots of people at U Chicago reckon that mutual fund managers aren't worth the money, and have run lots of numbers looking for places where they earn their keep. They don't find any. More worryingly, this seems to also be true in the private equity business, except some people there actually do seem to outperform but then take all that performance back through hefty fees, bonuses, and salaries. Good for them, not so good for the investor. |

parking rules don't apply to holden mcneil... (Nov 21 2003 23:50 GMT) - for those of you who weren't aware liveplanet [ben affleck's production company] is downstairs from the santa monica googleplex. earlier today a friend of mine sent me pictures of ben affleck's rolls royce phantom [yes, the rolls royce phantom apparently given to him by jennifer lopez] parked in one of google's spaces in the shared lot. this violates lot policy however it seems that nobody is feeling saucy enough to call and get the car towed. because of this i am currently working on trying to convince him that he should yell "affleck, you the bomb in 'phantoms' yo." when he comes out. |

I know it's been mentioned all over the place already, but after reading about the PostgreSQL 7.4 release, including the more detailed changes that Bruce published, I'm very impressed. On my TODO list for next year (that's 2004, in case you're not sure) it to play with PostgreSQL a lot more than I have in the past.... |

THE CAT IN THE HAT FALLS FLAT (Nov 21 2003 23:49 GMT) - When critics go to all the work of writing poetry to tell you how bad a film is, we're talking seriously bad. Quote from a review in the Dallas Morning News: There once was a book called The Cat in the Hat. You've probably read it, and loved it at that. But now it's a film And boy, is it rank, Made just to put cash In the studio's bank. |

WORKING FOR THE WEEKEND (Nov 21 2003 23:49 GMT) - Friday morning and the clock ticks down to the end of the day and the beginning of the weekend. For some strange reason, it appears that the weather won't be too bad so it's off to the golf course tomorrow morning. Every additional game is an added bonus and I intend to take advantage of the opportunity. Monday night I'm off to see the Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL hockey for those who don't know) in a private box at the Air Canada Center. Very posh. |
