Iraqi Security Forces Torn Between Loyalties (Nov 25 2003 04:59 GMT) - Iraqi Security Forces Torn Between Loyalties The U.S. administration in Iraq has high hopes for the Civil Defense Corps and other forces it is aggressively training, projecting them as an eventual alternative to the 130,000 American troops in Iraq. Some members have performed with remarkable bravery, and dozens have died in the recent wave of car bombings across Iraq. But Yusuf and the other men with the unit in Baiji -- a scared, disheartened and confused lot -- embody the challenge facing Iraqi forces as a new institution in a country still taking shape. |

Religious Turf Wars (Nov 25 2003 04:58 GMT) - Australia's Anglican Church is on the verge of a split, with the Archbishop of Sydney, the extraordinarily bigoted Peter Jensen, more than a little miffed over the church's position on the ordination of practicing homosexuals, in particular the Bishop of New Hampshire, Gene Robinson. The good Reverend has decreed that there is every chance he will behave like a spoilt brat and cut ties with the Archbishop of Canterbury and instead ally his group of god-botherers with the equally silly Archbishop Peter Akinola of Nigeria. I'm still wondering at the logic of a group, whose flock is rapidly dwindling, alienating people who want to join. But then it's not like churches have ever been big on giving a toss about their members when it gets in the way of their lust for power and money. Religious Turf Wars - Sunday, 23rd November 2003. |

Time flies when you're not having fun (Nov 25 2003 04:56 GMT) - It's hard to believe that it's been a year since last Thanksgiving. Last year at this time, I was getting myself all ready to take a flight to Robyn and Todd's for Robyn's 30th birthday. This year, I'll be staying homebound and heading over to Mac's for dinner, which should be fun. The plus side is that I'll be able to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. Last year, I had to watch football. |

Green Eggs and SPAM! (Nov 25 2003 04:53 GMT) - I read an article today about a normal, innocent geek desiring to torture and kill spammers, and to my dismay, it appears that he is going to be fined and potentially go to jail. That is so not fair! Since I can't actually say in public what I think about spammers, here is my top ten list of what I would do to spammers if I had to think of funny things to do to spammers: 10. Make them explain to their own mothers why they send explicit under-age / man-boy / horse+woman / dog+woman / an*l / inc*st porn*graphy to every known email address in the world, even though many of those email addresses are owned by people like their own mothers. |
