SHOCKED, SHOCKED (Nov 25 2003 23:13 GMT) - John Keegan's Intelligence in War has been an interesting read, but I am disappointed by its central thesis. Keegan's main point is that good intelligence cannot overcome poorly trained fighting forces, lack of equipment or numbers or disadvantagous geography. Here's another paraphrase:Intelligence is important in war, but the outcome of war depends on a fight; and in a fight, willpower, along with the power of one's arms, count for more than foreknowledge. |

Standards, politics and power over the Internet (Nov 25 2003 23:11 GMT) - In The Register, Kieren McCarthy gives an interesting account of the upcoming power struggle between the governing body of the Internet (ICANN) and the international telecommunications union (ITU). Standards are powerful objects of control - there's a lot of politics (both across individual societies and between countries with very different world views) in this debate that at first may seem purely technical in nature. |
