If it's not Bin Laden, it's William Burroughs (Nov 30 2003 07:59 GMT) - The only word for it is bitter -- and malignant. On a web page, William Burroughs engaged in outrageously bleating treachery that most Americans found shocking. "If Saddam could attack us at any minute, what was Bush doing on vacation... |

Helpline Comment (24589) (Nov 30 2003 07:58 GMT) - Wolfgang, it seems that the time stamp is simply the number of seconds passed since Jan 1 1601 (I say that not knowing anything about WinNT timestamps in particular). Your problem is the part where you divide by 3600, you need to divide by 86400 to get from seconds to days. |

PC VS. MAC (Nov 30 2003 07:55 GMT) - Leave it to Something Awful to come up with the definitive description of what makes Microsoft different from Apple. Windows-based PCs Machines running windows make up the largest portion of the PC market, yet they aren't perfect by any means. Take, for example, their vulnerability to repeated submersions in water, and the fact that they cause cancer. Current versions of the Windows operating system also suffer from a severe flaw which allows Counter-Strike to be installed. In spite of its problems, the Windows-based PC is an incredibly versatile platform. |

FULL CONTACT SHOPPING (Nov 30 2003 07:55 GMT) - The silly season has begun. The Christmas shopping orgy has begun. First victim, a 41 year old woman trampled at a Wal-Mart in Florida. You'll see lots of snarky entries from me as we get closer to the big day. I dislike the commericalism of this time with a passion. |

707 BARREL ROLL (Nov 30 2003 07:55 GMT) - I was watching the Discovery Flight channel this morning when they ran a short story on Boeing's first ever commerical jet, the 707. One of the most interesting bits was that, during a demonstration flight, the pilot actually performed a barrel roll (or more percisely, an aileron roll.) A Google search came up with this. Pretty amazing. A friend of mine years ago when I lived in Vancouver had a job that involved "stealing" aircraft from people who were behind in their payments, swore that he saw a test 747 perform the same trick out over the Pacific. |

Bears and Windows hibernate, but Macs don't (Nov 30 2003 07:55 GMT) - One of the features that I got used to on my Thinkpad is hibernation (saving and restoring the state of the machine to disk). It helps to preserve your working state so that you can reconstruct your mental environment quickly. Mac OS X is wonderful about going to sleep quickly and waking up from sleep quickly, but it can't hibernate. We were travelling all over Seattle today, and it would have been nice to hibernate to prolong the life of the Powerbook battery. Put that down for the requested features list. |

Alaska Connection (Nov 30 2003 07:54 GMT) - I mentioned to my neighbor that I didn't spend thanksgiving with my parents because they are too far away - but they just got back from traveling through the lower 48 in a motorhome. Him: Wait - how do they get their car down here? Across all the rivers and stuff? Me: |

Ecovangelism (Nov 30 2003 07:53 GMT) - On Animal Planet’s King Of The Jungle, contestants culled from a number of animal care occupations compete for the prize of hosting their own program on this popular network. In pursuit of this goal, aspirants must navigate “Survivoresque” obstacles to prove how these Marlin-Perkins-wannabes will fair in actual wildness situations. The skills of participants are critiqued by famed wildlife cinematographers such as Jeff Corwin and Nigel Marvin. As renowned chroniclers of the natural world, one would assume those claiming to adhere to the rigors of science would endeavor to base their assessments on impartial criteria. But in the final analysis, these naturalists are as opinionated as the most rabid Fundamentalist firebrand, regularly veering from knowledge to ideology without a moment’s hesitation. |
