If you work for AT&T, don't read this blog entry (Nov 30 2003 19:58 GMT) - Apparently, AT&T has initiated a plan called "Project Pinnacle," a companywide effort to cut costs while boosting profit margins as high as 40 per cent. Part of how they're doing is by doing what many service-based US companies are now doing: Outsourcing service jobs to India. Last week, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer ran an article leaking AT&T's plans, suggesting that as many as 70 per cent of the company's IT US-based people could lose their jobs. When AT&T employees went online to read the piece, they found that the company was blocking access to it. |

Collective Action Among Poor, Illiterate ... (Nov 30 2003 19:57 GMT) - Collective Action Among Poor, Illiterate Women in India. This is smartmobby if you consider socioeconomic experiments in collective action to be "technologies of cooperation." Another World Is Here reports on Malar (the Mahalir Association for Literacy, Awareness and Rights), a federation of 1410 women's self-help groups in India. Each member saves 20 rupees a month and attends a weekly meeting at which they learn reading and basic business skills. The money accrues interest and funds enterprises via microloans. |

Homeless in San Francisco (Nov 30 2003 19:56 GMT) - The Chronicle's new series of articles on homelessness in San Francisco is positively heartbreaking and an all around amazing narrative. It's also neatly timed to coincide with a mayoral runoff election in which homelessness is a major issue. Homelessness is a critical issue in San Francisco. When New Yorkers and Washingtonians recoil in horror at your city's streets, you've got a big-time problem. But I worry that the Chronicle cares less about the homeless than they do getting Newsom elected. |

Timeline - pretty good (Nov 30 2003 19:55 GMT) - I went to see Timeline last night, and it was pretty good. I read the book a few years ago, and I recall liking it - even though most of the details had long since slipped. Based on my recollection, the movie sped up the entry into the 14th century a lot; the book spent a lot more time at the dig site (the idea is that a bunch of archeologists, being subject matter experts, are the best people to send back in time to rescue thier mentor, who had insisted on going back once he learned of the opportunity). Even with the sped up opening, the movie played well. |
