Christianity has long been homosexuality's great enemy (Nov 30 2003 21:50 GMT) - From a really fine roundup of recently published gay history books. The classical preference for pederasty vanished with the conversion of Constantine to Christianity. Suddenly the polite debates about boy love versus heterosexuality were replaced by legal persecutions of homosexuals.... |

Do you buy the Apple Tablet rumor? (Nov 30 2003 21:50 GMT) - Ever since Bob Cringley posted his November 27th article titled, "Apple's Tablet Computer Might Finally Be That Link Between Your PC and TV" the Mac web has been abuzz in renewed Mac tablet/PDA speculation. We've heard it all before. Pre-MacWorld Expo Tablet Hysteria is as predictable as Pre-Millennium Armageddon Panic and, historically, just as likely to be accurate. What do you say? Will 2004 be "The Year of the Tablet"? |

Just Set the Halt (Nov 30 2003 21:48 GMT) - "Train yourself to think about where to put the halt, not to think about what the problem is. Of course it’s a great feeling when you can reason to the problem. But we’re not here to make our brains feel good, we’re here to get the code working as quickly as possible." (704 Words) |

http://archive. scripting. com/2003/11/30#When:4: (Nov 30 2003 21:47 GMT) - There may be another law here. It goes something like this. When you meet in private with someone else to talk about something other people are interested in, we all lose. So, for example, if Pete should go to a private meeting where something relevant to Paul is discussed, and Paul doesn't know about it, Paul's knowledge can't be applied to the process. He may be off doing something that assumes it's not being done, and he may be wasting huge amounts of time. |

http://archive. scripting. com/2003/11/30#When:4: (Nov 30 2003 21:47 GMT) - At the meeting with Dave Sifry and Kevin Marks last week, we had a long discussion about doing development in the open. I said that it was really important that we do so. I told Kevin, on the drive down to San Jose, that I feel we're at a turning point in the weblog world, either we're going to be like every other hierarchy that's ever been, with secret deals, lots of impediments to progress, eventual stagnation; or we're going to overcome that. I've been through this before, many times. |

Part Three (Nov 30 2003 21:46 GMT) - Case One: One Way or Another We All Work for Our Vice [3] The drive to Culvert Street was, for the most part, silent. Tegan only spoke to give directions and spent the rest of the short journey gazing out of the passenger side window, her eyes half closed behind the tinted lenses of her glasses. Jack had to admit that there didn't seem to be a whole lot going on in this part of town to warrant anyone's attention. The sidewalks were all but deserted. |

Part One (Nov 30 2003 21:46 GMT) - Case One: One Way or Another We All Work for Our Vice [1] Tegan was on her ninth kill when the alarm on her workpad sounded, indicating the arrival of a new message in her inbox. She tutted quietly to herself and tried to ignore the insistent beeping, her eyes never leaving the screen in front of her and the game that was being played out on it. She had finished with her last case two days ago, packing the evidence and case notes into a cardboard storage box and carrying them down to the bas... |

David Block @ 11/30/2003 12:48 AM (Nov 30 2003 21:44 GMT) - NS, I think you are right. First off, I have always believed that the spectrum from Libertarian to Authoritarian was a much more important spectrum than Left to Right. I don't always agree with Hentoff, but his passionate defense of the Bill of Rights is always worth reading. I also agree with you that for some reason my disagreements with Jimpy seem to become personal fairly quickly. |
