(Dec 01 2003 12:59 GMT) - "...three students are the subjects of a criminal investigation for violating the Oklahoma Computer Crimes Act by allegedly downloading illegal hacking materials on school computers at Rogers State University (RSU), a small state school in Claremore, OK. "However, while the authorities allege criminal activity, the students are alleging that anti-Christian policies may have influenced RSU's actions. "They said they were very vocal in their evangelical Christian faith while enrolled at RSU, including speaking out against a homosexual student group that tried to gain campus accreditation." |

"The machine can tell you ... (Dec 01 2003 12:59 GMT) - "The machine can tell you it recorded your vote accurately, but that's no more useful than listening to a tape recording of someone's voice, then replaying the same tape to decide if he was telling the truth. " My newspaper column is about the need for a paper trail with electronic voting machines. Perhaps the most important thing I learned lin reporting it is that even people who don't think we need paper ballots have some serious issues with the federal Help America Vote Act. It turns out that Guilford County is a leader in the use of electronic voting machines, and that our capable voting boss, George Gilbert, thinks the case for paper is overstated. |

swag v. schwag (Dec 01 2003 12:56 GMT) - i received an email from a reader from a reader regarding my use of the word 'schwag' to refer to the contents of the snowdeal store stating that , much to my surprise, it wasn't a word: now, i'll admit to doing zero research before using the term 'schwag'. when i used the word, i was thinking of the colloquialism that i had heard during my youthful days of indescretion to indicate poor quality marijuana - as in, "dude, that's schwag weed." [ not that i had anything to do with the purchase or... |

Though the people interviewed scoffed at the notion of living on the UES, calling it "a very barren nothing land, a wasteland of rich people," they quickly convertiing after finding decent living options and realizing the UES's quality of living (lower crime rate, many groceries, restaurants and bars) would work for them. NYC know-it-all and Columbia professor Kenneth T. Jackson, says that the UES has been competing with the East Village and Hell's Kitchen for the college graduate renter market. |
