For the Workers (Dec 01 2003 23:14 GMT) - Is a revitalized Communist Party the answer to the increasingly vicious corporate assault on working people and their communities? A labour activist makes a compelling argument for a party that has historically been the object of much derision by mainstream labour leaders. For the WorkersBy Will LambertOriginally published by Northstar CompassWhen the people are ruined to such an extent that there is always a large number of unemployed in the town... |

UFCW's Health Care Hypocrisy (Dec 01 2003 23:14 GMT) - As a massive grocery industry strike in Southern California enters its second month questions are piling up about the UFCW International's strategy and the signals its leaders are sending to the labour and the business communities alike. One of the key issues in the dispute is the supermarket industry employers' efforts to offload health care costs onto the workers. The union's leaders have taken a hard position against this kind of offloading. Y... |

A Dublining I Will Go (Dec 01 2003 23:14 GMT) - My passport was finished and mailed out on 11/25, which means it should be here any day (any day before my trip would be perfect). I'm so excited that I can almost live with the cold I've had for three days, a deadline fast approaching amid numerous distractions (like sinus pain, documents and meetings), a sick kid (who sounds like a mini Joe Cocker at the moment), and a growing list of things to pack. In doing some research for the trip, I realized that Dublin has almost the same weather this time of year as D.C., so no new wardrobe will be needed. |

Up to medievalism (Dec 01 2003 23:14 GMT) - Yesterday I was listening to a BBC program on NGOs (audio file) while I was working. I suspected they would focus on the country of my birth, Bangladesh, and I was right (part of the series The Giving Game). If... |

[grid :: brand] Like cattle? (Dec 01 2003 23:12 GMT) - (This post is an offering to Ashley Benigno's gridblog project. Others here, here, here and here, with MTK.) In economics, the brand is understood as a device for conveying information from seller to buyer. In the curiously monochromatic rendering of classical economic theory, all a brand really exists to do is transmit information about the quality, consistency, and reliability of a given product, one way. This presumably affords the would-be buyer the ability to make more accurate decisions about the true worth of the commodity in question, and therefore what they are willing to offer as a purchase price. |

NewsFactor: SuSE Flies Open-Source Banner in SCO Fight (Dec 01 2003 23:12 GMT) - This is not the most interesting article I have ever read but the quote at the made it worth the read. "We're[SUSE] not planning to sue anybody, so I'm not seeing where the competition is," Eckert said. "As far as I know, they're nothing more than a litigation company right now, not a software company. "http://www. |

More Pertussis (Dec 01 2003 23:12 GMT) - In this month's Cortlandt Forum is a good little review on pertussis. We continue to see it in the office this week. Many kids on erythromycin - though I gather that some physicians in the area are using azithromycin for 5 days. Not much research to support this - so I'm sticking with erythro for 14 days. |
