Gaviria says petition drive is legitimate (Dec 01 2003 23:53 GMT) - OAS Secretary General Cesar Gaviria reiterated that up to now there has been no proven irregularities in the petition drive known as the "Reafirmazo" and assured everyone that the results have a high degree of legitimacy, attempting to block the strategy by Chavez and his supporters to accuse the opposition of cheating. Gaviria added that in the joint supervision with the Carter Center of the process that took place in the last four days, Venezuelans had signed freely and the result has total legitimacy. The President and some parties have spoken of a megafraud, Gaviria expects that those charges are substantiated to the CNE who will value them and is the impartial referee and all have recognized this condition up to now. While pro-Chavez leaders continue to speak of fraud, others began distancing themselves such as the Attorney General who said that the process had been "normal". |

More problems for Elsevier (Dec 01 2003 23:49 GMT) - Harvard University library officials have announced they will cut print subscriptions to almost 200 academic and technical journals by the end ... [Peter Scott's Library Blog] Elsevier loses at Harvard. Some of its more esoteric and/or expensive journals could be in trouble if this spreads. vent 1123 (Dec 01 2003 23:47 GMT) - Fans of my portal of emotional bile, Vent, will be very pleased to note that I've added another 122 entries this evening. There's the usual mix of desperate realisation and hopeless despair, pure hatred and criminal intent, plus lots of lousy spelling. Rather thrillingly, I've also been vented against personally for the first time, whilst another reader has thoughtfully submitted a rather lengthy recipe for shark soup instead of the usual therapeutic letter. As I'm not sure it fits quite comfortably within Vent's tormented pages, I've given this mouth-watering bit of prose it's own spot on the web. Bon Appetit. |
