The Desires Of Young Men Revisited (Dec 01 2003 23:42 GMT) - The Desires Of Young Men RevisitedI read something Scoble wrote about walking around the Stanford campus, in particular, about Leland Stanford the man and railroad baron who started the university. He goes on to ponder the many businesses founded in Silicon Valley and what was behind their spawning. I started to think of what young men see in their lives that make them strive to build things in the world, want things, desire power, position, prestige. I only mention young men because my son is already desirous of building buildings, inventing things. Do girl children see the world the same way? |

Moveon.org's Media House Parties (Dec 01 2003 23:41 GMT) - This Sunday, December 7th, the Internet-based lobbying organization, Moveon.org is organizing over 2000 houseparties across the USA, in which MoveOn members open their homes to view a film that "deconstructs the case for war with Iraq." A decentralized organization uses the Internet to help geographic neighbors who don't know each other (but who share political convictions) to meet face to face, and uses the opportunity to present them with an alternative to the messages conveyed through mass media. |

Mojo Mail is now Dada Mail (Dec 01 2003 23:40 GMT) - ReachCustomersOnline.com has alerted me to the following intellectual property abuse:Mojo Mail, a terrific open source (free) software tool for email newsletters, has had to change its name to Dada Mail. I would note the reason for the name change is a great example of what is wrong with the internet in general and the US PTO in particular. Mojo Mail has existed since 1999. |

Today's movie: The Front (Dec 01 2003 23:38 GMT) - Released in 1976, The Front was one of the first serious--and non-allegorical--attempts by Hollywood to explicitly examine the effects of McCarthyism on its own people. Most of the major creatives involved, including the writer, director and several actors, were themselves victims of the blacklist and are identified as such in the credits. The star, Woody Allen, was not on the list but had an upfront and personal view as a staff writer for Sid Caeser's TV show at the time. The story has Allen, a cashier at a Manhattan diner and failed bookie named Howard Prince, approached by childhood pal who's been put on the list and not able to get work. The pal wants to put Prince's name on his scripts and have Prince pretend to be a new writer; |
