Only in Oregon (Dec 02 2003 01:24 GMT) - This is why I love this state. What other state would you not have to worry if you accidentally forgot to lock up when you left work for the evening? The Safeway store was empty, but the folks who went in, looking to buy groceries, guarded the store until somebody arrived to lock up the place. Thanks to Jack for the link. |

Citizen captures police act of ... (Dec 02 2003 01:23 GMT) - Citizen captures police act of racism on camera phone. For anyone following the social impact of camera phones and the role played by Citizens as camera phone reporters, this was a story just waiting to happen and brings to mind the Rodney King beating, videotaped by an amateur. A blatant act of racism by the Portland police was snapped by a "citizen reporter" armed with a camera phone. The story and the photos were published in the Portland Tribune and broadcasted on television. Police offers parked their car outside Ringlers restaurant with a stuffed gorilla attached to the car's grill last Tuesday night, - where a largely black crowd had gathered for a weekly hip-hop show hosted by disc jockey Mello Cee. |

World AIDS Day (Dec 02 2003 01:23 GMT) - Today is World AIDS Day, and non-profit groups, medical community representatives and governments are reporting in with news that's a mix of good intentions and poor results so far. Along with a bevy of bloggers who have heartfelt concern about HIV/AIDS, I offer notable notes for the busy reader: The overall infection rate is increasing, with some 46 million infected. (ABC News) In Africa as a whole, the infection count is around 25 million. By contrast, the WHO, probably the best positioned health group in the world, expects at best to treat 3 million in the worlds poorest nations by 2005. |

The Limits of Gun Ownership (Dec 02 2003 01:22 GMT) - Gun-rights advocates aren't the only people who believe that individuals should be free to own guns. Even gun-control advocates usually specify that they aren't trying to ban all guns. But most activists on both sides of the gun issue say there must be limits on gun ownership. Why? So that guns don't fall into the 'wrong' hands. |
