Powell Says He's Against Regulating VoIP (Dec 02 2003 04:03 GMT) - Despite some fears (expressed last month by former FCC chair Reed Hundt) that the FCC had already made up their mind to regulate VoIP, it certainly doesn't sound like that from the description of today's FCC meeting on VoIP as written up by the Washington Post. FCC Chair Michael Powell made all the right statements about why regulating VoIP at this point would probably be bad, and that the various "problems" people described in not regulating VoIP can be solved through other methods. |

Eric Raymond on Microsoft (Dec 02 2003 04:03 GMT) - Eric Raymond, president of the Open Source Initiative, points to the transcript of a recent conference call in which he was quizzed about open source by Prudential Securities analyst Brent Thill and a group of Prudential Securities investors. At one point, Thill asks Raymond, "Is there a way that Microsoft could coexist with the open source movement?" Raymond answers, "It's hard to see how because they're used to a level of pricing and a level of profits that can really only be sustained if you have monopoly lockout. So in that sense I don't really see how they could survive." |

Sexual Globalism (Dec 02 2003 04:02 GMT) - Sexual GlobalismWhen I was away for Thanksgiving, doing family things and taking care of my son, I wasn't thinking about Fleshbot* very much. I was thinking how unsexy I felt and how little I was thinking about sex and how inappropriate it felt when I was preoccupied with the big family holiday of Thanksgiving to even consider sex. When I got home, the holday was over, my kid was asleep in his bed, our suitcase unpacked and dirty clothes in the laundry, I did go check in to see what they'd been up to while I was away. I went to look for all the reasons everyone else goes to look -- I felt a little sexy and it's a sexy blog. And I was thinking about how we integrate our work selves, our parent selves, our public selves, our sexual selves, now that all this sexual content is available on the web which surely blurs the line between public and private. |

Downloading your hotmail inbox (Dec 02 2003 04:00 GMT) - Adrian just pointed me to a fantastic tool: Gotmail, a utility to download mail from Hotmail accounts. It's a command line utitlity, written in Perl and making use of the curl binary, which can connect to Hotmail over the web and grab any new emails, saving them locally as an mbox file and deleting them from the Hotmail server. Naturally, anything like this is completely dependent on Hotmail's design staying the same and maintaining the tool is a constant arms race. At the moment, Hotmail is ahead - a recent upgrade to the Hotmail design (some time in the last few days) has rendered Gotmail useless. |
