My new toy: Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra (Dec 02 2003 04:33 GMT) - Well, after waiting for a few weeks, my new MP3 player (err, my FIRST MP3 player), the Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra, arrived yesterday via UPS. So far, I'm pretty darn happy. The sound quality is excellent, even with the ear buds, and it's even better with... |

The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art (Dec 02 2003 04:31 GMT) - "Founded in part by Eric Carle, the renowned author and illustrator of more than 70 books, including the 1969 classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art is the first full-scale museum in this country devoted to national and international picture book art, conceived and built with the aim of celebrating the art that we are first exposed to as children. Through the exploration of images that are familiar and beloved, it is the Museum’s goal to foster connections between visual and verbal literacy and to provide visitors of all ages and backgrounds with the confidence to appreciate and enjoy art of every kind." The website isn't that impressive (IMHO, they ought to have some digitized selections from their collection) but the museum, which we visited this weekend, is wonderful. The current exhibit, through mid-January 2004, explores Russian children's book illustration from 1899 to 1939. I am not a big fan of Soviet political realism; |

Linking and Thinking (Dec 02 2003 04:29 GMT) - Well my computer drama continues, though there's an end in sight. That's a comforting thing, and I'll write more about that when things get more sorted out. For now, it's time for Link and Think. The basic idea, is that on December 1st, website owners do the same thing they usuually do, except they talk about HIV/AIDS. So if you write a techie blog, then ins... |

Clara Bow (Dec 02 2003 04:28 GMT) - Clara Bow invented the notion of sex on the silver screen. She was the first actress who visibly flaunted her sex appeal and, in turn, became the most talked-about resident of Hollywood. Idolized by Louise Brooks in the 20s, Marilyn Monroe in the 50s, and Madonna in the 80s, Clara was an icon of sexual freedom for women everywhere. But beneath Clara's radiant, carefree laughter hid a pain that she couldn't ignore forever. |
