Lights, camera, hot-tubbers (Dec 02 2003 07:59 GMT) - "This doesn't have anything to do with oil, does it?" said Peter Camejo in a dream I recently had, refusing to disclose his own position, which is contemptibly bloviating and anti-movement. Isn't it clear by now that the world is... |

Call For Papers: Blogging issue of quot; The Reference Librarianquot; (Dec 02 2003 07:59 GMT) - I will be editing an upcoming issue of "The Reference Librarian" that will focus on weblogs. The issue will cover all aspects of blogging, and how it can be applied to librarianship. I'd love hearing from foreign and non-traditional libraries and librarians. At some level papers should relate to libraries, whether directly or indirectly. This is a peer-reviewed scholarly (aka no pay) journal put out by Haworth Press. |

Better Salaries Initiative Questioned (Dec 02 2003 07:59 GMT) - Library Juice has just published some correspondence from this past May on Mitch Freedman's Better Salaries Initiative. Rory Litwin raised some critical questions about the whole better salaries movement, in the context of other professions and other countries, suggesting that we're not so badly paid after all and that librarians are motivated by more than money. Luis Acosta, Mark Hudson, and Mary Ann Meyers offered intelligent responses. |

A few intersting stats in this one as well, including 85 percent of library patrons return borrowed materials on time. |

I_dont_know_UIs, _but_I_know_what_I_like... (Dec 02 2003 07:58 GMT) - (SOURCE:The Sells Spout)- Chris sounds like a soul brother: somebody who admires and loves cool game graphics and realizes that the future of UIs is something more akin to games than today's UIs. QUOTEAnd there's no relief in sight! Avalon, by taking advantage of 3D hardware and displays that haven't even been invented yet, along with intrinsic support for every kind of media and animation that I'm familiar with, blows right by the limitations we've grown to know and love in Windows and web applications. |

Interest rise (Dec 02 2003 07:57 GMT) - Following a 0.25% rise in the base interest rate from the Bank of England at the start of November, I got a letter from my bank this morning, letting me know they have upped their mortgage rate in response, but by 0.36%. Normally the banks simply pass on the change in the base rate to home owners, but mine seems to be pulling a swift one. |

On site at OSAF, Day 1 (and 0) (Dec 02 2003 07:51 GMT) - Last night I left Seattle to fly down to San Francisco for a week of high bandwidth time at OSAF. Since it was the end of Thanksgiving, I left the house one ferry early to allow for the possiblity of car traffic in and out of SeaTac. Said traffic never materialized and I was quite early for the flight. Then the flight was delayed due to weather in San Francisco. I had a leisurely dinner of airport food (if such can be called a dinner), and parked by an outlet at the gate, where I proceeded to setup my ssh config file to do the port forwarding necessary to get to my home IMAP server. |
