More than 3.6, Chavez blasts Gaviria (Dec 02 2003 12:59 GMT)

- The opposition says it has verified over 3.6 million signatures but they are still arriving in Caracas. Meanwhile President Hugo Chavez blasted OAS Secretary Cesar Gaviria for saying the signature drive was clean, saying Gaviria had taken sides with the opposition. Thus, it is clear the strategy by Chavez will be to question the results. I want to make sure that I personally recognize the effort of Venezuelans abroad.

- The ECJ has ruled that referring to various persons on an internet page and identifying them either by name or by other means constitutes processing of personal data by automatic means within the meaning of Community law. The case was referred to the ECJ following an appeal by a Swedish woman against a 450 Euro fine by the Swedish Regulator. Mrs Lindqvist had set up an internet page on her personal computer with information for local parishioners about herself and her 18 colleagues. The (...)

Necessary reading (Dec 02 2003 12:58 GMT)

- If you're not going to vote for George W Bush in November, 2004, then don't bother reading this New Yorker story. If, on the other hand, you are still entertaining thoughts that this man deserves the awesome responsibility of leading our country for four more years, you'd do well to further inform yourself.

Real Live Preacher (Dec 02 2003 12:58 GMT)

- If you have an interest in spirituality, or good stories, or just life in general, you probably ought to be reading the Real Live Preacher. The Preacher is a semi-anonymous, well, preacher from a church somewhere in south Texas. His weblog is really a rolling memoir of sorts, and his storytelling ability is cause for envy. Anyway, the dead trees world has figured this out and he's gotten a book deal. Well deserved, I say.

World Aids Day (Dec 02 2003 12:58 GMT)

- Today is World Aids Day. The big news of the day is that the World Health Organization has launched a campaign to supply 3 million of the world's poorest Aids patients with drugs by 2005. It's going to cost a lot of cash, but I think this sort of aspirational project is the best use possible use of an international organization. They can address the problem on a global basis, and beg for contributions from all governments. Even if they fail to meet their goal, I respect the fact that they're trying for something audacious.

Not to pick on Matt (Dec 02 2003 12:58 GMT)

- Matt Haughy is doing his part to kill email (as it is currently understood). I am becoming increasingly convinced that email as we know it is going away. I'm beginning to think that the best solution would be signing all of our email with a certificate that comes from a reliable authority (your company for professional email and a third party for personal), and then relegating everything that's not signed to a "suspected spam" folder. First class email will be for people who want to confess their identity. As far as white lists go, the odds of my responding to a challenge from a white list system approach zero.

The Geneva Accord (draft) (Dec 02 2003 12:58 GMT)

- Tim Bray has performed the service of posting a handy version of the Geneva Accord to his Web site. The Geneva Accord is a model accord reached through years of negotiations between nonofficial parties representing the Israelis and Palestinians. The goal was to demonstrate how an agreement could be reached that was acceptable to both sides. I think the accords are a triumph, not just for the content, but because they give the Israeli left a story to tell to Israeli voters. It seems like for the past few years, the only voice has been the Likud voice, which seems to say that the solution to the ongoing problem is to beat the Palestinians until they give up.

- New York, USA – The 2004 edition of Flamenco Festival USA will take place between January 29 and February 28 of 2004 in the cities of New York, Boston, Hartford, Washington DC, Cleveland, Chicago, and Miami.   In four short years, Flamenco Festival USA has become the hottest flamenco event in the country.  With sold-out shows in such prestigious venues as City Center in New York and glowing reviews in publications like The New Yorker and The Wall Street Journal, the Flamenco Festival USA has made a reputation for itself with a speed almost equal to its dancers’ famous footwork.    The festival is now acknowledged throughout Spain as the country’s most important cultural ambassador, responsible for igniting an explosion of new interest in America for flamenco music and dance. Over 100,000 Americans have seen Flamenco Festival USA concerts, and 2004 will be the biggest season ever.
